H264 is not an editing codec. You need to convert the files before editing.
Foe more info on the process a search of the cow will provide plenty of info.

Firs thing h.264 is not an editing codec so you need to convert the vidio to a proper editing codec first.
If you have questions on that do a search of the cow you’ll find tons of info.

If your running final cut express then I see no reason that you should be getting a Mac Pro.
Save some money and get an iMac.

Well you say you are on a Power Mac so that would mean you have a PPC processor instead of the newer intel processors. However you also say your running 10.6.7.
10.6 requires an intel processor. So the machine you say you have cannot run the operating system you say your running.

Apple releases firmware updates via software update. so you should just be able to run that.
However a 2 second google search revealed this https://support.apple.com/kb/ht1395
The oldest machine on that site is 10-11 years old and if your machine has a floppy drive then it is well over 10 years old as Apple has not included a floppy drive on a machine in well over 10 years.
So if your machine is that old your probably out of luck.

Converging a set of images to a video is super easy in QuickTime Pro. That and a lot of people do not have After Effects. I myself hardly do any motion graphics, let alone advanced motion graphics that would require AE.
The reason for asking what version of FCP Josh has was to find out if he even had the ProRes codec available to him. Seeing as ProRes is only available with cretin versions of FCP, and this is a FCP Forum

In the last few years, I’ve become a bigger fan of digital archives. Hard drives are cheep.

You cannot be serious. Think about it a little, use your head.
Most people know how to use a word processor, does that make everybody a professional writer? Absolutely not. Does that mean that people no longer see the value of professional writers. Absolutely not.
As long as you can tell a story better vis your editing, I think you’ll be fine. FCP is just the tool you use to get things done. If I’m currently using an axe and someone else comes out with a chainsaw Im certainly going to start using the chainsaw, it doesn’t matter how long I’ve been using that axe.
