Off the top of my head I don’t know where those templates, loops, etc are located. You can probably find the location of them in a search of the forums.
Another option is you can actually install all the templates loops etc onto an external hard drive, thus saving a LOT of space in the internal drive.

Keep inmind that if you do an archive and install you will need to reinstall Final Cut Studio, and any Adobe software if you have them on your system. Those apps actually install things into the system folder that gets moved to the previous systems folder when you archive and install. It may be more work to do an erase and install, but you definitely end with a cleaner end result.

Well with some of the data being overwritten by the install you will not be able to get every thing back, if you are able to get anything at all.

I know you can on a Macbook Air, and you may be able to on an Intel Mac, but don’t quote me on that one.

File sizes will be the least of your problems if you work with native HDV. With your system rendering and conforming the HDV will be the most painful part.

I HIGHLY doubt that. Apple makes ALL there employees sign a non disclosure agreement. If An Apple employee really did have access to something like that he would fired so fast if he was to show it to someone else.
I have a fried who is a Genius at an Apple store, and when he was in training at corporate headquarters, he had lunch with developers, and the developer could not even tell my friend a fellow Apple employee anything about what he was working on.

I would recommend a MacBook Pro over an iMac. The big reason for this is that the MBP will have an express slot that you can use with a esata card and esata drives, thus keeping your media drives on a completely separate buss from your camera/deck.
