Still missing some of the info that David asked for.
What format of video are you working with?
What type of drives are you using for your media? With that many streams of video, you will most likely need a beefy raid. There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

Those are steps for the old Titanium power books. To replace the drive on newer powerbooks it is quite a bit more difficult. And if it is a 12″ powerbook then it is even more difficult. And you must have the right size tork screw drivers.
I am of the opinion that it is best to have a certified technician do the work. That way if a mistake is make that damages the computer any further, they are the ones held responsible.

In my opinion based on how old your computer is NO.
You are talking about a 6 year old computer, anything that is currently being sold is going to be a bit improvement.

[Chris Poisson] “From what I know about ProRes capture via FireWire, batch is not an option.”
Correct ProRes captured via FireWire can only be captured using capture now. This is the one thing preventing me from capturing my projects in ProRes. Currently I capture in HDV & change my render settings to ProRes.

Yes it does mean that it cannot find the hard drive. Some times if the internal drive is not functioning then it will even prevent the computer from booing from an external drive or boot CD/DVD’s. Disconnect the internal drive and attempt to boot from your external drive again.
