My best advice and the advice of every editor I know is to NOt edit off of your system drive, and to ALWAYS keep media drives separate. The system drive has enough to do running the OS and applications, ad large video files onto that and your editing will suffer. The most common problem will be dropped frames and slower render times.

That could be part of the issue. FCP 3 was built to work with quicktime 5. Often using old versions of FCP with newer versions of quicktime can cause issues.
But it could also be related to my first question
Are you playing the video on the same computer that you edited it on? If not that would easily be the issue, you are playing a video made with a codec on a machine that does not have that codec.

That sounds kinda like the software is janky, you could try reinstalling the OS and apps, however I would recommend an erase and install.
Also have you tried running disk utility.

As far as B being slower to render, rendering uses RAM and that machine has half the amount of ram as the other. (keep in mind that FCP can only use about 4GB of RAM)
Running multiple applications is again a RAM thing.
Think of RAM as a workbench the more you have the more things you can do at a time or the bigger the project you can work on.
As far as transferring of files and capturing of video its hard to say without knowing how the hard drives are connected, how full the hard drives are, what format the drives are.
From what you have described so far everything sounds perfectly normal.
You cannot expect a machine that is probably at least 3 years old and has less RAM to preform like a machine that is less then a year old with more RAM.There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

Also what version of quicktime are you running and what version of the OS. FCP 3 is an extremely old version (the latest is v6) on so quicktime and OS version will could be issue also.

What application?
What exactly is NOT preforming?Please provide more details about what the issue is.
Also a little more info about the machines like the type of machine, ie iMac, MacBook etc.
Some apps are depend heavily on graphics cards. If your PPC computer has a killer graphics card and the intel has a crapy one then that will play a big factor.

That is all nice but it still is not going to help anyone be able to figure out what is wrong over the internet. There are to many variables that could be causing the issue. I have seen kernal panics be caused by so many different things that there is just no way I can say over the internet.
I am sorry to be a bit rude but I it just seems that some people believe that they can find the answer to anything on a forum. Don’t get me wrong forums are amazing. It just that in cases like this a trained technician with physical access to the machine is going to be able to figure out the cause a hole lot faster then anyone on a forum can.

Kernal panics can be caused by anything from janky software to bad hardware. I recommend you making an appointment at the genius bar at the apple store and let them have a look at it because issues like this are not vary easy to trouble shoot vie a web forum.

You can do a migration to the new machine, however just about every one I know who is experienced with computers will tell you to start fresh and install every thing from scratch on a new system. There is just a lot less risk of problems that way. ESPECIALLY WITH PRO APPS.

Best thing to do with ANY machine you are going to stop using is to ERASE it and install a clean OS on it. As far as registering FCP with the new computer it will ask for the SN when you install it.
