Exactly DVC PRO HD is a codec that comes with FCP. The codec is not free so you will have to ether purchase a copy of FCP for the other computer or you can try purchasing the codec herehttps://www.dvfilm.com/raylight/decoder/index.htm I have never tried the codec from that source however.
Your only other option is to convert the file to one that uses a more universal codec.

My guess is that he is not working with footage that was captured ProRes so the computer has to convert it.
What format video are you editing and what are your timeline settings?
if you are not editing on a ProRes time line then you gain nothing my exporting to ProRes other then larger files.
As for your question, sure it would be nice, but that is not an option on any editing software. When ever exporting anything you should have a ruff guess at the size it will require and make sure you have the required space.
Also it is not a good idea to let your hard drive get to full. For most things leave about 15% free at all times, but With video I have heard its best to leave 50% free.

There are lot of things that could potential cause a machine to freeze up. It could be caused by hardware or by software. Because there are so many potential causes it would be extreamly dificult to troubleshoot the thing over the Internet. I recomend making an appointment at the Genius Bar at your closest Apple Store and let them properly troubleshoot it in person.

As long as you have NOT started putting anything onto the drive then try a program called Data Rescue (If you have written files onto the drive then your chances are slim because you have written over the location where the files were)

You can download the demo and run it and it will tell you if it can recover anything. If it can you will have to purchase the program.
You will also need s completely different drive to rescue the files so because you cannot save them back onto the original drive as that would right over the original files.

I second the drive dock. Just remember to store the drives in anti static bags to protect them.

Try the noise reduction tool in Soundtrack Pro (I think it was in the version that came with FCP 4.5 but I’m not sure). That may help some, however if the audio is as bad ad you describe the ONLY way to get workable audio would be to reshoot with proper audio gear.

Thats what Im hoping. If it is true we might just see some major improvements in FCP not so much in features, but under the hood.
FCP is currently a 32 bit application and that is the reason for the ram usage limitation (https://support.apple.com/kb/TA27734). For FCP to become 64 bit it would it of course needs to run on a 64 bit OS (new we do have that in leopard) however we must remember that FCP is based around quicktime. As far as I can tell by searching the vastness of the interwebs Quicktime is still 32 bit. Keeping in mind that quicktime is a CORE component of the OS it makes perfect sense that for those core components to become 64 bit, it must be done at a OS level not just a quicktime update. According to some reports about Snow Leopard there is a big shift toward more 64 bit support (https://news.worldofapple.com/archives/2009/03/06/new-snow-leopard-seed-packs-new-quicktime-cocoa-finder/).
Sorry to geek out on you there, but what I am personally hoping for is the new OS to have a 64 bit version of quicktime and therefor the new version of FCP to require that, thus enabling FCP to become 64 bit and we also no longer have the ram limit.
