You might try to bring down the overall levels of your source material by about -8 db (in the video editing app). It could be that the high levels are clipping the soundcard inputs and the recorded files are fine – or it could be a combination of both. The meters built into Final Cut Pro are not real accurate and tend to peak prematurely. Other NLE meters also tend to be inaccurate with regards to peak indication.
However, as Ty and Frank alluded to, It IS most likely clipped on tape, so don’t get your hopes too high.

Installation and operation of any one of the options mentioned is a piece of cake compared to the old SCSI systems. Terminators and LUNs! – I don’t miss them at all.

I’d go with the SDX 900 if you plan on an SD post workflow. It’s the only one out of the bunch that has a 2/3 inch chip and that makes more difference in the style of shooting you’re looking to do.

Sound Devices 7-series. The 702T would work perfectly.

My favorite is the Sound Devices 302 (3 input, 2 out about $1300) It is very clean, simple to operate and compact
I also like the Sound Devices 442 (4-input. 4 direct out about $2500) If you need more inputs
Shure FP-33 (3 input, 2 out about $1400) Used to be the ENG standard until the 302 came along.
Other excellent brands – Cooper, Wendt, PSC, Sony
The less expensive brands (Rolls, Samson, Kamesan) are fine for less critical applications where preamp noise and durability is not as much of an issue.

Apple Logic or Digidesign Pro Tools (rack unit option is more portable)

One option is to get something like a Fostex MR-8HD 4-track hard-disk recorder. It will allow you to record 1 to 4 tracks simultaneosly to the internal HD at 16/44.1. You can record linear timecode to a track (ahead of time or in real time) and then display that on a timecode reader.

The record the Mackie output or live mics/FOH mix on the other three channels. At the begining of each tape, each camera can roll on the TC display for sync purposes, and then be free to move about until either the end of the tape or until tape is stopped.

Check and see if “Field Rendering” is enabled in the Render Settings. If it is not, select “Upper Frame First” (upper for HDV, lower for DV). If you have created comps with fast motion, try using motion blur (It’s the “M” icon on each layer in the Switches/Modes section).
Use the HDV codec you tried first.

I did just that. The problem of DVDSP freezes and video corruption still existed.
HOWEVER-I also re-installed the OS and zero-formatted the HD but without applying the Security Update 2006-007 and 008 and Security Update 2007-001.
No corruption or freezes as of now. I’m into about 14 hours of testing with this configuration.
