you have to make the changes with the firewire cable unplugged, then ikt won’t be greyed out

  • I’d guess either you have a head clog which you would need to have the heads cleaned; you have used low grade tape; or you have the playback option set to something other than what your footage was shot with (DV, HDV, or Auto). Try placing it in Auto for the playback signal settings in the menu.

I don’t use Vegas but you should probably check 2 things:

    1. Your capture settings in Vegas match the material you’re trying to capture (dv? hdv? I assume hdv)
    2. On the XHA1, unplug firewire cable. In signal settings, make sure playback is set to auto, and also make sure down convert is not set to on if you’re trying to capture HDV. (make sure firewire is not connected or some settings will be grey’d out.

switch off A1 andconnect firewire cable, switch on the A1

    good luck!

yes, but only the presets in camera can be modified (not saved on a sd card) and if any are locked unlock them to changes settings. This info is in the manual.

May 28, 2011 at 10:00 pm in reply to: shutter speed vs frame rate vs dvd quality

It’s a bit difficult to guess since I have no idea on how you’ve been viewing it. But any slower shutter speed than necessary will begin to stutter and show more motion blur and the slower it gets the more pronounced it will be obviously.

These things aren’t going to be as noticeable while editing and just looking at the monitors on FCP’s interface. Do you have a client monitor attached as well? What are you viewing the dvd on?

Also as I’ve said earlier de-interlacing progressive footage to begin with is unnecessary and could possibly be causing issues as well.

I use the XHA1. But I don’t use FCP, so I can’t help you there.

What’s your reason for using 1/30 shutter? Even if you were shooting 24F the default (and recommended) shutter would be 1/48. The rule of thumb is double the frame rate to get the 180 degree shutter angle. I would suggest NOT using a 1/30 shutter and use 1/60 if you’re shooting 30F.

The other thing, why are you deinterlacing? It’s already progressive if you’re shooting in either of Canon’s F modes.

    I believe all you’ll need is a FW800 (9 pin) to FW400 (4 pin) cable to connect the GL1.

January 1, 2011 at 9:40 pm in reply to: Canon XL H1 HD issues/problems

I don’t own the XLH1 and am only familiar with the XHA1 (the auto gain switch is separate from the 3 selectable settings switch on the side of the XHA1 body). I do however have a pdf manual of the XLH1 and I’ve noticed the auto gain switch is integrated with with the selected gain settings so I guess my advise earlier is moot. However… I believe if you have the power dial set to anything other than TV, AV, or M that gives you manual controls, auto gain will be active regardless what you have your gain set to.

I don’t use FCP but it could be that you were still in a HD project/timeline even though you were using the SD converted file you imported and it may be basically upconverting the downconversion 🙂 Just a thought.

As far as I can tell the only two ways that could happen would be if you are monitoring V1 with the effect editor active or you ARE monitoring V2 but have the foreground level at zero.
