Travis, just for the record… grain/noise is usually related to something other than data rate. Have you made absolutely sure gain or auto gain isn’t active? What does the camera’s output look like directly connected to your monitor?

Try making sure in the menu that playback is on AUTO (not specifically HDV or DV). And also very important is disconnecting firewire from the camera before making any playback/signal menu changes.

If that doesn’t help I’d try another firewire cable first before doing anything drastic.

  • If you think about it it kind of makes sense there’s no audio without importing it. Using red as a plugin is for video. There’s nothing to reference regarding audio without importing.

You could try making sure it’s not muted and also making sure you’re doing a ram preview and at a lower res/quality. But you’re right… I’ve always found Red to very sluggish. After Effects responds so much faster than Red in all comparisons that I’ve found.

    Good luck!

  • Using Red as a plug-in in Avid there’s no other way I know of other than exporting the audio tracks as a wav file for instance, then import that into Red.

That may be, but even if it’s set to 0 or even a negative number if you have the auto gain switch active it obviously wouldn’t make a difference. Are you positive that’s not/wasn’t active?

My bet is auto gain was active without knowing.

I enjoyed it. Kevin always does an excellent job. The audio kind of hiccup’d every now and then but that’s usually expected due to bandwidth issues among other things.
