I don’t get what you think it is about my post that says “I let the software define who I am as an editor”. What I am saying is that I’m very comfortable in my workflow right now, and I know it to be incredibly efficient. I realize that if I don’t find future versions of FCP useful that I’ll be able to use what I’m using now for awhile. However, it appears that I will, before too long, have to embrace a different workflow. Believe me, I’ve done it before, and I’ll do it again. I just would rather spend my time in other ways. That’s all.

If I were Apple, and I could sell 5000 copies of Final Cut Studio to professionals for 1000 bucks a pop, or 500,000 copies to anyone and everyone at 300 bucks a pop, it would be a no-brainer.

Believe me David, I hope I’m wrong. Maybe there’s a “non-mass-market” mode. But seriously? Touchscreen? Mechanical buttons may not be “hip”, but they are superior in so many ways. I don’t think that matters anymore.

March 5, 2011 at 5:53 pm in reply to: Elements Disappear from Project

Actually, I just figured it out. I’m using Popcorn Island’s “FCPtoAE” script, which until this very moment I loved. Just realized that when I import an XML file using the script, it hoses certain elements from my AE project. Weird.

Workaround: Start a new AE Project. Import your new elements from FCP. Save Project. Open your Original Project. Pull the New Elements AE Project into the Original Project. A lot less of a hassle than it sounds like, and totally worth it.

I will contact the folks at Popcorn Island about the issue…

December 7, 2010 at 6:05 pm in reply to: 60D vs T2i (my take)

The 60D will send video out of the HDMI port while shooting, but at a reduced frame size. Kind of a drag, as it means no Ki Pro or Nanoflash recording. Maybe it could be fixed in a firmware update, who knows? Otherwise I absolutely love this camera. The stills, of course, are remarkable.

    p. 173 of the manual. The 60D will, in fact, terminate shooting a movie automatically if the internal temp reaches a certain point. A thermometer icon will blink white and then red as the temp approaches the limit, then it will cancel shooting, and will not shoot again until below a certain temp.

Small correction to an above post: There is a way to set up iChat screen sharing so that NO action is required on the host computer to log in. Detailed here:

August 19, 2010 at 1:18 pm in reply to: Ergonomics + shoulder pain

I freelance as well, and the situations range from pretty good to criminal as far as ergonomics are concerned. I have, however, reached the right level of comfort with my clients and/or the right amount of being old and fed up that I generally bitch about ergonomics and suggest what might make it better for me, and most people are receptive.

Try to get the desk as low as possible, almost on your lap when your feet are flat on the floor with hip joints level with or even slightly below the knees. Monitors low enough that the eye line is level with or even looking slightly down at the top edge of the monitors.

Regarding the mouse cramps, the Apple corporation has not made an ergonomically correct mouse in its entire history, and the newest one is the worst one EVER (ok, besides the round one with the original iMac). I use a Microsoft Natural Mouse 6000, and love it. I wasn’t sure about it for the first 3-4 hours that I had it, and after that, I knew I’d never go back. I carry it around to all of the places where I freelance now.

I’d almost rather sit at a 10 year old avid running on NT with great ergonomics than a brand new Final Cut system that breaks my back after an hour. It’s the absolute number one concern for me.
