March 31, 2016 at 6:12 pm in reply to: Grass Valley ADVC-HD50 HDMI to HDV converter and Sony Vegas Pro 13..Whether it could be used as you suggest, I have no idea. However, I would think you should look for another solution for capturing HDMI for a couple of reasons. First, if you look at B&H Photo, you’ll see it’s no longer available. Second, and more importantly, you’d most likely be converting progressive 1920 x 1080 HDMI footage to HDV which is interlaced (1440 x 1080). You would be losing horizontal resolution as well as having to de-interlace for renders for any web distribution. Plus, at 433 quid, it seems a bit pricey. E.g. a Blackmagic Design Intensity Pro 4K card is less than $200. Whether it plays with Vegas, I have no idea. Regardless, I’d search elsewhere. Perhaps someone else could make some recommendations.

March 30, 2016 at 1:44 am in reply to: Typical method to re-render edited action cam videos (or others) – render settings? One thing you did not mention was the frame rate of your render. Since its an action cam, presumably, you are recording at 1080 60P. In that case, you should probably render at 60P unless, you have very minimal movement. If you do render to 30P, you should definitely disable resampling.
I can’t speak for others, but here’s what I do for GoPro 2.7K footage that is recorded at 60 Mbps. After basic cuts editing, defishing, denoising where needed, and cropping the original footage, I render to an intermediate (Sony XAVC S–also at 60 mbps) at 1080 60P for final color grading. I also use the XAVC S footage for archiving. Once happy, I’ll do a final render using the one-click Vegas to Handbrake script. https://www.vegasvideo.de/vegas-2-handbrake-en. In Handbrake, I usually use the QuickSync rendering option with an average bit rate of 22 Mbps, which seems to be OK for upload to YT or Vimeo. The results are probably better using CPU encoding, but the rendering is much faster in QS and I can’t really tell the difference for renders at 22Mbps.

March 28, 2016 at 3:38 pm in reply to: How to fully utilize separate .veg projects in one timelineor is there another way?
Another way to “combine” the two projects is to simply open your 2nd project, do a Crl-A, copy and then paste at the end of your first project. However, this works only if your track layout is the same for both projects. Also, whenever you do the paste, your cursor must be at the end of the first project with the top track selected.
A second way to deal with this problem is to keep the projects separate and simply stitch them together during render or render separately, and then combine the two rendered files into one afterward. If your projects are really long and complex, this approach is probably the easiest.

March 27, 2016 at 10:12 pm in reply to: How to remove video preview pics from video trackThis causes the section of video to reset the preview pics which slows the preview video to a stutter for 5 seconds.
I presume you mean the thumbnails. You can turn them off by opening Preferences, Video tab, and select “none” in the dropdown menu by “Thumbnails to show in video events”. This may or may not have an effect on your preview performance–I have no idea. But you can try it. If it does make a difference, please post back.
is there a keyboard shortcut to switch between highlighted video clips?
By highlighted, I presume you mean selected. The easiest way is to place a marker at the beginning of each selected event. (There are freeware scripts for doing this, or you can use something like Vegasaur which will do this and a lot more). Then simply ctrl-right arrow will move to the next marker and in your case the selected event.

There is an app called Filmic Pro that can solve this problem. I believe they have both iPhone and android versions, although I’ve never used them. In any case, it is highly recommended by others and only $10.

If you look at the First video stream numbers, you will see that the frame rate is not 29.97 but something else. Most likely, that camera (a phone?) is not shooting at a constant frame rate, but rather a variable frame rate even though MediaInfo says it’s constant. To use such footage, you will have to transcode it, e.g. using Handbrake, to make sure the frame rate is constant. Vegas and other pro editors do not ingest variable frame rate video. There will be some generational loss this time when you transcode, so in the future, may sure that your camera is indeed recording at a constant frame rate.

When you say “uprez”, I presume you mean simply “fill the screen” so that the black bars on the sides of your 4×3 footage disappear. Once your project settings are set to “widescreen”, simply select your event, open the pan/crop widow, place cursor somewhere on the image, right click, and select “Match Output Aspect”. Your 4×3 image will be cropped and parts of the top and bottom of the image will be “missing”. While this “works”, the resolution of your image will be significantly degraded. Unless you have a pressing need to “fill the screen”, I wouldn’t recommend it.

So my question is, is the amount of clips in a selection (or a group) shown somewhere, or does someone know a way to count them?
Yes. It’s very easy. First select the events you want to count. Then enter Alt-6, Edit Details. In the Show box, chose Selected Events and it will display all the events you’ve selected. Just scroll down to the bottom of the window to find the number of events.
BTW, the edit details window is very useful. E.g. you can do a copy and paste the window into Excel.

Stella,
It’s most likely not in your editing, it’s in your recording. If you have to add +20db to hear anything, you definitely have a problem. But, you need to provide more information. What type of mic are you using? What are you using to record? Sounds like your PC? Audio recorder? If it’s a PC, what audio card are you using? What recording software are you using? Before anyone can help, you will need to provide detailed information.
