It’d be nice to see Canon jump into the fray and offer a firmware update to the 5DMiii that shoots 14bit uncompressed raw. Even if they charged $200.00 for the firmware instead of offering it free, I’d buy it. But then again, that’s wishful thinking on my part.

5DtoRGB lets you process at either REC 601, 709 or Full gamma. I don’t think MPEG Streamclip does.
I don’t know what happens when you mix 2.976 with 23.98.

I just received the monitor from Swit, this Friday – May 10. I’ll put it through some test over the next week or so and then will write and post a review. So far the build seems quite good. I spoke to Swit Friday after it arrived and mentioned the comparison to the JVC monitors. I was told from the Swit rep that JVC’s 7″ & 9″ monitors are made by Swit. The larger JVC monitors are not.

23.98 is a rounded off number for 23.976. Always use 23.976. Try going to the app store and getting the free 5DtoRGB Lite. It does a much better job. I use the paid version that does Batch renders. It is very fast and a much better job en MPEGStream Clip. Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with the company that owns 5DtoRGB, I’m just an enduser.

AJA KiPro Mini will also work to record ProRes or DNxHD– both 4:2:2 10 Bit from an 8 bit signal. Ryan is correct, the 4:2:2 colorspace will help with green screen work. Alas it is 8 bit but if you are careful and light appropriately it shouldn’t be a problem. Remember the days of DV and DVCAM– 8 bit as well.

I agree with Simon. Get 5DtoRGB Batch. If does the best conversion L&T in FCP7 is sketchy and I’ve abandoned it for 5D conversion. The latest version of 5DtoRGB is built on the AV Foundation and is multiprocessor aware. It is very fast.

The Canon 50mm is a great lens. I could never justify the price and ended up getting the EF USM 1.4 non L version. It works great and the .2 stop difference wasn’t a deal breaker for me. I use it on a 5D Mark iii.

How are you transcoding to ProRes? I humbly recommend 5D to RGB. I have nothing to do with the company but I find it works the best. L&T in FCP7 is very spotty.

If you record to an external device with the new firmware, I think you can record much longer than 29.59 minutes.
