Well, it really depends on how the footage was shot. The 5D can shoot 720 and 1080. Progressive as well as interlaced. Import one of the original files into FCP, right-click on the clip and select Item Properties in the dropdown-menue. There you can see what the framesize and the field-dominanceof the clip has. Then use these settings in MPEG streamclip.
Apple Prores is definitly the right codec to use (Don’t go for the HQ one, it is pointless or even harmful for 8bit footage).

I use this program to convert 5D footage, it is lightly better than Streamclip in my oppinion. It is called 5D to RBG and just transcodes 5D footage into prores.

Why 720p? Keep it high quality for the edit. 1920 x 1080 24p, uncheck interlace scaling or deinterlace.

I agree with Simon. Get 5DtoRGB Batch. If does the best conversion L&T in FCP7 is sketchy and I’ve abandoned it for 5D conversion. The latest version of 5DtoRGB is built on the AV Foundation and is multiprocessor aware. It is very fast.

OK, i am using MPEG Streamclip for this. And all footage shot on Canon 5D with 23.98 frame rate. I’m not looking to conserve hard disk space. Instead, I’m looking for best quality. That being said, I am transcoding to regular “apple prores 422”

i have 3 specific questions:

1- How do i know if it is progressive or not? If progressive, then i deselect all the interlacing options on the right in MPEG streamclip, but what is the difference between progressive and non-progressive?

2 – Also, in item properties for my raw footage it shows all my files as 23.98, so i imagine i should type 23.98 for frame rate rather than 24 in MPEG Streamclip, is that correct? also i guess i will keep “Better Downscaling” deselected since i don’t even know what that means and it’s probably something i don’t want.

3- The field dominance in my FCP7 sequence is set to “none.” But on MPEG Streamclip it gives me only two options, either “upper” or “lower field first.” Which one should i select?

PS: OK i forgot to mention also, the raw footage is all 1980 x 1080. But on MPEG streamclip, when you choose that option it says it will scale it. What does that mean? is that OK? also, the option on MPEG Streamclip says HDTV 1080i. I guess the “i” means interlaced, in which case it won’t be progressive, so then i should choose an interlacing option on MPEG streamclip? as you can see i’m quite confused.

23.98 is a rounded off number for 23.976. Always use 23.976. Try going to the app store and getting the free 5DtoRGB Lite. It does a much better job. I use the paid version that does Batch renders. It is very fast and a much better job en MPEGStream Clip. Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with the company that owns 5DtoRGB, I’m just an enduser.

I agree with Warren. Get 5D to RBG. Not only will it do a better job, ii also will automatically detect weather your footage is progressive or interlaced (and your type of interlaced – upper or lower).

The other way to find out about your Field Dominance to import one clip info FCP and right-click on it. From the drop down menu you select “Item Properties”. A window will open, check what it written under “Field Dominance”. It can be progressive (no field dominance) upper and lower. Use that in MPEGstream if you really need to use that program.

You should also set your sequence setting to the same value. If you need to de-interlace your material for delivery, I would do that in the last step (when you export out of FCP)

Hi! thanks. How is 5DtoRGB better that MPEG Streamclip? I already did half the transcodes in MPEG Streamclip and the quality looks superb. Does the image quality come out even better with 5DtoRGP?

i’ll use 23.976 but the first batch of transcodes were done by somebody else and he may have already used 23.98 instead. Is it ok if i have a mix of clips with both 23.976 and 23.98 settings in the same sequence?

i would use 5DtoRGB but i am on OSX 10.58, and i believe 5DtoRGB requires minumum 10.6.
Also, half the video was already cut with footage converted through MPEG streamclip.
