We have a similar 12 core machine here that’s running with dual nVidia cards since it’s a Davinci Resolve based system. Basically if you want to have the fastest performance with Premiere Pro, you get the most card you can afford.
Honestly I’m not sure what is the best card as we have not researched that for a while since we are beginning to replace our Mac Pros with new iMacs. I’d rather spend the money on the newer machines than try to keep those older boxes running much longer. We’re picking up the 27″ iMacs with the 32GB RAM kit from OWC and running either AJA IoXTs or T-Taps for output. Working extremely well. I’ve got multiple blogs on the subject, here’s the latest two….

Two of our systems are LHi boards with zero issues to report other than we cannot lay back to tape properly yet. Though the new drivers released today promise to address that problem, we haven’t had a chance to download and test yet.

That’s odd. You weren’t getting sync’d playback until now? Our Dell and Macs have all been in perfect sync since the last set of driver updates. SDI and analog playback out of the BOBs.
Even the thunderbolt IoXT has been rock solid in sync on the iMac.

that’s a very important point. You MUST download the correct drivers for whatever product and also OS you’re using.

I started my own company back in 2001 after a three partnership with another guy on my first company. 60 hour work weeks are welcome respites from the usual never-ending workweek. When you work for yourself you MUST be available almost every waking moment via email / text / etc….. When they know you work at home, the clients expect you to work 24/7 since you don’t have to go anywhere.
And you have to work VERY HARD to keep your clients, expand your client roster and just keep up the quality work your clients expect.

Well, you did say you left a good job for more money. In this industry, more money does not necessarily equal creative and job enjoyment. I know that firsthand which is why I got out of corporate work and started my own company.

I’m amazed at the quality of the young kids today. I’m currently working with some high school kids on an animation project for an upcoming documentary.
I created a three part “Starting Your Own Business” series for the Creative Cow a few years ago and pretty much everything in there still applies. Except that I believe it’s even harder to start your own business today and build a name because EVERYONE can be a video producer today. Tools are so cheap that it’s harder to get a foothold and hold it. But pretty much all my thoughts are in the series, hope it’s helpful.

Sure it supports progressive, but I don’t think it supports 23.98 progressive. I just looked at the specs online and I see no mention of 24p support. Generally if it’s not mentioned, it’s not supported. Switch that output to 30p from the Kona and you’ll probably see picture.
VERY few professional monitors support true 23.98 playback which is why AJA does all the realtime conversions to the formats that all monitors do support. Our Flanders Scientific pro monitors DO support true 23.98 playback but we rarely use that mode. Even with 24p, we always edit in 29.97 since we’re cutting for broadcast.

They don’t have any dealers, they sell direct. That’s how they hold the line on prices. They have support in the UK, just contact them.

Well, technically if you are paying the employee’s salary, they cut what you instruct them to cut. Like when I was at CNN. I could not “morally refuse” to cut something political in nature that I did not agree with.
However, in my own company, we’re a very small shop. 5 full time employees only. If one of my editors objects to something, and they have a valid reason, I will not force them to cut something they don’t agree with. This has only been an issue one time with a piece that involved very adult subject matter that the editor was not comfortable with. So I cut the project with the client myself.
In the end, you are paying the salary and you make the decisions. ProBono or not, you’re still paying them. I prefer to keep my shop in harmony and would not force any employee to cut a pro bono project they did not agree to. Personally I cut most of the pro bono work myself anyway, usually on my home system at night and weekends.

Nope. We send the analog feed from our K-Boxes to the Mackie Boards to feed to the audio monitors. No problems with any of the Kona systems, Mac or Win, since the latest drivers came out.
Only the iMac uses the embedded audio out of the FSI route.

No issues here whatsoever with K3 audio out of our Dell PC machine. It was in the beginning of the CS6 run but the latest drivers are handling everything just fine now.
