First off, how are you monitoring the sound when you’re mixing on FCP? We use self powered KRK Rokit 5 monitors fed by an AJA Kona board here.
Your home theater is 5.1 surround probably, right?
The DVD is Stereo right?
Generally in a 5.1 surround system, the Center speaker is the one set up for voice reproduction. The left and right speakers are generally set up for music, sfx and background elements.
When you play a stereo DVD on a 5.1 surround system and it only plays on the left and right channels, the voices generally sound more muffled while the music and SFX play louder.
Try forcing your system to play in Surround mode with your DVD to force the audio to the center speaker. Your voice levels should come back up.

You really want to do this in hardware. And actually a Terranex is not always up to snuff as we recently found out. Alchemist is apparently the way to go if you want a perfect conversion.
We’ve been sending our 1080i/60 masters to PostWorks New York for conversion to 1080i/50 for our European shows. They’re really good and really reasonable.

Euphonix used to make one but I’m not sure what Avid has done with that device since they purchased the company.
I have been using Wacom tablets to edit since 1997 and I find them faster than any sort of jog / shuttle / control device.

Pasting into an SD timeline is the worst thing you can do. FCP is terrible at conversion of HD to SD. At the very least send your HD Quicktime movie of the timeline to Compressor and have Compressor make the conversion.
A much MUCH better way would be to invest in something like an AJA Kona board which does full broadcast conversions in realtime. That’s what we do here.

Yes with Final Cut Pro, they will be converted to FCP 7 files.
No with Final Cut Express.

[anders bundgaard] “i’ve supplied graphics with an alpha channel to a fcp editor. when this is imported i shows that the clip has a field order of upper. the quicktime is without field order and using the animation codec. i’ve double checked my after effects setting and imported again but still doing it. is this a bug in fcp or are they incorrectly imported… is there a way of changing the default so this does not happen…?”
Are you rendering to the exact specifications of their timeline? Such as they are working in a 720p / 59.94 ProRes timeline so you are supplying them with a 720p / 59.94 Animation file?
Are they working in an Interlaced project such as 1080i / 29.97? If so, then you need to provide an interlaced clip.

Here in Atlanta we have the Georgia Video and Film Source Book that lists all manner of production companies and personnel in the area. I’m sure there’s something like that in New York. Might also want to call around to Post Houses to see who they use.
We use PostWorks New York all the time and they seem like great guys. Might want to give them a ring or an email for a recommendation.

FCP does not allow video capture via USB because USB 2 is too slow to handle the data rates. USB 3 on Windows machines is definitely viable as shown by the BlackMagic product.
Here’s a cable converter that claims it can connect USB devices to Firewire ports. Whether it would work or not, I have no idea.
