i have the PowerMate and the Contour ShuttleXpress, but using either device for “jogging” results in the same problem: even when you crank the dial as fast as you can, the playhead moved slowly. i’ve played with all of the settings on both devices, and i can’t figure out how to make it faster or more responsive (other than using “shift-arrow” as the triggered keys…but that make the slowest jog speed 1-second, which is too chunky).

does anyone know of a device that functions more like the jog wheel in the canvas or viewer (much faster and more precise)? or better yet, how to get either the PowerMate or ShuttleXpress to behave that way? thanks!

I gave up with the Contour Shuttle pro. It doesn’t actually jog, just give arrow left/right keyboard commands. I didn’t think FCP was capable of proper jogging until Andy Mees told me that there was a jog command that controllers like Tascam do implement.

Euphonix used to make one but I’m not sure what Avid has done with that device since they purchased the company.

I have been using Wacom tablets to edit since 1997 and I find them faster than any sort of jog / shuttle / control device.

[walter biscardi] “Euphonix used to make one …”

And still do, Euphonix products are still alive and well under their Avid ownership:

Simple keyboard based transport control (J-K-L) works best for me tho.

    Walter,
I have an Wacom Intous 4 medium tablet. I purchased it for use with Final Cut Studio, but often find myself reaching for the mouse. I have changed preferences and settings to help adjust myself to the tablet, but I can not get it set to a point that I want to use it. All I have seen on the web are demos of how easy it is to use, but I have not found anything specific for editing.
Any help on finding some documentation or tutorial would be much help.
    Thanks,

    Victor

When I was first confronted with a Wacom tablet about 5 years ago, it took about two weeks of solid use to really become comfortable and proficient with it. I was partially motivated by the pain in my wrist from too much mouse use. Since then, I have no pain and have never gone back to a mouse. I love my Wacom tablet! Give yourself two weeks of consistent use and deny yourself the mouse. If it doesn’t feel right by that time, you should just resign yourself to a lifetime of mouse drudgery and carpal tunnel surgery.

You could try the logitech revolution mouse – the mousewheel is free-running and works very well as a jog controller. Just place the mouse pointer over the canvas or viewer.
