    Are you Capturing(Tape-based)

    or Transcoding(Cards,Harddrive based cameras, etc.)

Tape must be capture via FW400 at least.

You can use USB cardreaders to transcode or transfer footage.

    hope that helps.

Oh I meant my IEEE1364 port itself is broken, no way to fix it

I didn’t mean the cable, the port itself, that is way I asked if FCP allows USB video capture

    Thank you

Good point, I forgot to mention that I need to capture video from tape only, and the port IEEE1364 itself is totally broken

I was curious if FCP allows video capture from tape using a cable converter IEEE1364 to USB

It’s time to get educated. Firewire is 1394.

There is no such thing as a Firewire to USB or vice versa.

What you need is a Matrox, AJA, Blackmagic or Moto capture device. Google those products.

If your firewire port is indeed fried, get it fixed. USB is NOT an option.

if your mac is a laptop, and has an expresscard slot, then you could buy a firewire express card to solve your problem.

[adam taylor] “if your mac is a laptop, and has an expresscard slot, then you could buy a firewire express card to solve your problem.”

You can also purchase Firewire cards for Mac Pros as well.

[Richard Angelous] “Hi, does anybody knows if FCP allows USB video capturing trough a simple CABLE converter from firewire IEEE1384 to USB2 ???”

FCP does not allow video capture via USB because USB 2 is too slow to handle the data rates. USB 3 on Windows machines is definitely viable as shown by the BlackMagic product.

Here’s a cable converter that claims it can connect USB devices to Firewire ports. Whether it would work or not, I have no idea.

    eeer, Walter,
    USB2 is 480 mb/s.
DV runs at 50 mb/s, so speed is not an issue…
I often capture to USB disks, no problem there. The reason FCP cannot capture over USB lies somewhere else. (Start with looking for an USB port on the back of your deck…)

(for correct numbers, note that the bus speed can be the weakest chain, but often the drive speed is the weakest chain, so actual speeds may be lower)

But i agree with the others, just get the darn port fixed and be done with it.

The bad news is that, as someone who has fried Firewire ports on both a Mac Book and an 8 core tower, you have to replace the main logic board which, on a Mac Book cost me about $500. More like $1500 for the tower unless I am mistaken.

Gloomy prognosis. I wonder how you fried it?

I had a faulty Firestore camera drive recorder and ran around plugging its Firewire into various computers until I smelled burning (really!)and managed to restrain myself. I took out three computers by the time I was finished.

    Best wishes

Are all the ports fried or is there only the one? You can use a FW400 to 800 cable and capture through the FW800 port.
