Send your Sequence to Color, don’t remove any of your transitions.
If Color cannot recognize a transition, it will put a dissolve in the timeline when it goes back to FCP.
You can simply replace the dissolves with the original transitions in FCP.

What format are you editing?
What is your media array and how large is it?
How much room do you have on it?
When was the last time you cleaned it off? (erased and reformatted)

If you have access to an AJA Kona board, it’ll do the conversion in realtime and do it much cleaner than simply trying to let FCP do the conversion. If you just drop the 50p material into a 25i timeline in FCP, the software does not do an elegant job of making the conversion.
As others have suggested, you need to first convert the H.264 to ProRes. We use Compressor most of the time for this and sometimes Episode Pro.

January 13, 2011 at 10:56 am in reply to: HD Map Animation – Largest file size possible?Generally with an animation like that, I create maps in multiple pieces with a transition between the various sections of the Map. You’d probably have to create a Map in the 5000 x 5000 pixel range to do everything you’re asking about in just one image so he can zoom far enough.
Or you can create the wide map, then a closer one and then the closest one to which he can transition between them.
After Effects and even Motion will actually do a much better job of the animation vs. FCP.

[Ryan Spence] “I am hoping to send a 1080i 29.97 signal out of a FCP7 project which I would like the Kona LHi to downconvert to 720p 59.94”
That is a cross-conversion, not a down-conversion.
[Ryan Spence] “Would this work? I know you can also by the AJA HDP2 for this but it’s only for one project and not worth spending the money on.”
Yes, this is a realtime conversion. You set up FCP Easy Setup for AJA Kona LHi 1080i / 29.97 (codec of your choice)
Then you set the AJA Kona Control Panel with the secondary format to 720p / 59.94. Now assign that format to the output that’s feeding your monitor. All outputs on the Kona are hot at all times and all can actually be sending out a different signal if you so choose.

[Anhtu Vu] ”
Btw, the K3 does not have analog audio out, only AES, you get 2 channel of RCA output if you buy the optional K3-box.”You’re the first person I’ve heard of that has the K3 without the breakout box. Not sure why anyone would not want to have that as it’s much easier to connect gear.
Smoke is the first software I’ve heard of that disables the analog output on the K3. That’s pretty dumb quite honestly on their part.
Any SDI to Component adapter should work since it’s just a video feed. No clue on how the BMD will handle the image in terms of any sort of a delay to your monitor due to the conversion.

[Anhtu Vu] “Btw, K3 does not have analog audio out just component.”
Btw, yes it does have analog audio out. We’ve been using three Kona 3 for years.
[Anhtu Vu] “Please read my 2nd post….i know K3 has component out BUT i need to use one of the SDI out port as Smoke for Mac ONLY support SDI in/out on K3”
I still don’t understand what the problem is here. You have two SDI I/O on the Kona 3. So one goes to your Smoke and then you send the Analog to your Monitor. Right?
Why do you need to convert the second SDI out of the Kona 3 to Analog and not use the Analog output from the Kona along with the analog audio?

I always say buy the fastest computer you can afford and don’t forget to load up on the RAM. For a laptop, I would fill it with the maximum RAM it takes.
There will be very little perceptible difference between the two machines in terms of day to day use, but as the software develops over the next few years, you’ll probably wish you had that little bit of extra horsepower.
