Glad that you solve the problem. Just for the knowledge:
You can use Mesh Warp Effect to distort the Image.
You can also use Text-Anarchy Plugin from Red Giant to distort shape through a path using Path Distort Feature.

There is no way other than animating the Camera(parented to a null or not).
You have to do it manually. As Dave said creating a Camera Rig would help to give precise and subtle camera moves.
Check this tutorial:
https://lesterbanks.com/2010/05/after-effects-using-simple-camera-rig-and-sure-target-together/
Or you can use Video Copilot’s Sure Target Plugin which will automatically animates the camera and move to the next target. Though you have to experiment with it a little.

I don’t think that there is a need of any Cylindrical BG. Simply use the Bg that you have created in PS with a Motion Tile Effect or CC Reptile Effect applied to it.
If you want the Cylindrical look then Joseph’s advice to go with CC Cylinder will help.

It might be possible that some effects are applied to the footage. Select the Layer in the Timeline and check if some effect is applied. Try disabling it, if there is any. Also check the Scale Parameter of Layer.

Check this tutorial on using Particular with Particles as Textures/Sprites.
Also as John said, Trapcode Form is is another way to go.
Check this:
https://lesterbanks.com/2011/05/numeric-logo-reveal-using-after-effects/
Search for “Logo Reveal using Trapcode Form/Particular” and you will get many results which will help.

As Darby said that it is a bit confusing. Relinking/Replacing the footage in Project Panel and Replacing the Footage in Timeline are two different things with different Procedures.
Try Replacing/Relinking the footage first in Project Panel and the Replace the footage in Timeline dragging the footage over the layer to be replaced holding Alt/Optn.
