Great advice, thanks. I have questions about each solution that you mentioned.
1) when you say digitize the analogue signal with the TC generator turned on you mean you would have to have a deck with an S-video out or composite, right?
2)The only wierd thing about the “timecode generator” in FCP HD is that when you drop it onto the clip it appears to start at 00:00:00:00 so it’s not taking the actual timecode from the master clip but generating it’s own new TC. Is there a good way to fix this?
3)Does the qttimecode thing you mentioned do anything different than this video effect? what exactly to you mean by removing the TC track, how do you do that?Thanks for your help!

When you exported your XML did you make sure to check the box that says “include master clips…”? Also I know that there are two different versions of XML, version 1 and version 2. FCP 5 exports a version 2 XML by default unless you specify version 1. If you are going to a program that will only import a version 1 XML it’s possible that you would lose some of your clips.

Try going into FCP HD menu>User Preferences>Render Control
and make sure that all boxes under Render & Playback are checked (Filters, Frame Blending for Speed, Motion Blur.

This is amazing! I am a lab tech in the FCP labs at a university in SF and only one hour ago I ran into the exact same problem with a student who had an Mpg1 file and was trying to import it into FCP but it was only importing the video. Thanks so much for bringing this up!
I am downloading the MPG Streamclip right now! Can’t wait to test it out.
