Does anyone know how to digitize a quicktime file in FCP with the original timecode from a tape stamped onto the file, or can you place a timecode window onto the quicktime file in FCP after you digitize that footage? I need to give quicktime files to someone who doesn’t have FCP so that they can view the .mov in quicktime with the orginal time code from the tape for logging.

    Thanks

    a couple of ways:

    – digitise the analogue output of your camera/deck, with TC display turned on.

    – capture the clips,
drop FCP’s TC Print filter on them,
    export
(will take a while, as it renders the clips)

    – there is an Apple Developer App called qttimecode.
    https://developer.apple.com/samplecode/qttimecode/qttimecode.html
it can display the files TC.
bad news: says it;s for QT5, and i cant get it to work in QT7. 🙁

no wait, i can, but you have to remove the TC track first, then add it back, and manually enter the TC.
    sheesh!

Great advice, thanks. I have questions about each solution that you mentioned.

    1) when you say digitize the analogue signal with the TC generator turned on you mean you would have to have a deck with an S-video out or composite, right?
2)The only wierd thing about the “timecode generator” in FCP HD is that when you drop it onto the clip it appears to start at 00:00:00:00 so it’s not taking the actual timecode from the master clip but generating it’s own new TC. Is there a good way to fix this?
3)Does the qttimecode thing you mentioned do anything different than this video effect? what exactly to you mean by removing the TC track, how do you do that?

    Thanks for your help!

    hi, violet.

    1) that;s right, then you;d need some other device to capture the signal. like a card, or a DV converter box.

    2) try the “TC Reader” filter. that’l do what you want.

    3) qttimecode doesn’t involve rendering.
“remove timecode track” is a function in qttimecode

    hope that helps,
    nick
