Got the server back up threw in a greenscreen clip and now everything seems to be working. Chroma keyer hasn’t worked for six months, first in V3 and then in V4. Hope it keeps working.

Thanks Wayne. This is a lot of great info. I think I have enough to go into feeling pretty good. I’m sure I’ll find more questions once we get going, but this is the most clear, understandable info I’ve seen in all my searches.

Wayne this is really helpful, I feel like I’m starting to get my head around this now.
One last question for now. Since this is a compressed format how does it work with graphic files? we use animations, standings charts, lower thirds and flying logos. We use uncompressed for our online because in DV quality there is a big hit in quality. Do you know the color space, DV is 4.1.1 and HDV IS 4.2.0, what is XDCAM?
BTW I’ve checked the SONY site and found some more info, but it all skews toward the HD version of XDCAM, the bit rates they mention are different for than SD for HD.
    Again thanks for the feedback.

    Wayne,
Thanks for the info. I’m beginning to feel better about this now. I now I’ll have more questions as we start testing but my big question right now is what is the data rate for XDCAM? How big are the files going to be? You mentioned no offlining if you import files, not necessarily a bad thing if the files are reasonable. We currently have 3TB for offline and 1 TB for online. Normally we use around 1.5 TB for the DV footage for our offline. I understand that xdcam can record with different data rates, which one do you use? Is this determined by the shooter?
    Thanks again.

For question 1- If your not going to online, just using what you have now for a master, then use Nattress Standards conversion, works great.
If your going to online convert your files first, either with Standards Conversion or have a transfer house do it. From my own miserable experience if you use the footage as PAL in an NTSC timeline when you go to up rez your timecode will be off and your clips will be captured wrong. I found out the hard way.

Question 2 you have to go into the motion tab and change the distort field, I’m not sure of the numbers off hand.

I have a JVC BR DV600 deck and it has set up as an analog output option and I also have one of the canopus DV converters and it has a dip switch that lets you add setup.

Why would items 2 and 3 not be as good quality as #1? Do you feel it happens in compressor or are you saying that outputing files using methods 2/3 produce lower quality output?

If you want to use protools you’d need at least an mbox or one of the new m-audio boxes that support protools. If you want to import an OMF from FCP into PT, then you’d need Digidesign’s DigiTranslator or whatever they call it now.
I own this setup, but only use it when forced to. In normal usage I use Digital Performer. It doesn’t need any specific hardware to run, it will run on the built in speakers, though it will work with any core audio interface.
OMF import and export are built in and work very well, I’ve imported OMFs from FCP hundreds of times with no problem, I’ve sent OMF files to POP where they’ve imported them into their AMS Audiofile system with no problems.
If you want to play a DV quicktime movie, no problem, and you can send it out firewire and there is built in delay to keep the video and audio in sync.
For us this is just the tip of the iceberg, there are lots of ways that DP is more suited to Post than protools.
Its our opinion and we’re sticking to it.:).
