In that case, I am gessing you were encoding in the reverse field order as original file.
Sometimes Encore does have trouble recognizing field order and you have to manually specify it.

Just to reconfirm, AE 7 does support 2 pass rendering, and it does make a difference if you are encoding a noisy video, or for the web at say, 512 kps. Of course, the argument can easily be made that if you are watching a video at 512, a little more noise shouldn’t break your day 😉

Well, I think any plastic box would do. Just add some padding around. But why not just buy External drive casing ? I would do a search on ebay, I have seen some very cheap deal, comes with casing, firewire or usb2 circuit adapters. By cheap I mean about 12 bucks)
Depends on how much money you are willing to spend of course, and how many drives you have. Other than than you might also be better off buying one on those multidrive towers, slip them in and connect them all together just like array system. All of that just seems easier than having to swap drives for easy access.

Ha, yes, I did encounter this issue a couple of time. (Which is why I wrote worked “most of the times” 😉
I believe it simply has to do with the way it was encoded, not that it is actually a bad encoding.
I have seen this happen whith DVD recorder set to an extended play, where the horizontal resolution was cut in half.
I have also sucessfully used a demuxer in that case, it splits the vob files back into separate Video and Audio files.

If you are importing into files in Encore other than Mpeg2, and they are already compressed, you have to expect some drop in quality. The compressor has to deal with a video that is already noisy, and that is something it doesn’ t do very well.
Now, do you want to encode Progressive (Without fields) or intelaced. If you are using interlaced you have to watch out for field order. (Lower field first or upper field first). In doubt, try both, the wrong one will look jittery in scenes with motion.
You have to watch the final on a TV to really be sure, intelaced never really looks good on a computer.
Finally, what quality settings are you using to encode ?

If you use the render queue you should find a .wmv option under Export Module.

You can also try this little trick, it works for me most of the time.
Copy the .vob files from the DVD to your desktop, and rename them .Mpg. That requires that the “show extention for known files” be unabled on a PC.
AE should recognize them as valid video files.

Well it could just be that the cpu is maxing out. How many hard drives do you have ?
It is always best to separate your OS from your capture files (Including images, especially if they are high rez), and possibly your preview files as well, so basically 3 hard drives.
