I have started backing up projects to hard drives and was wondering if anyone has seen a storage case or system for bare hard drives. I usually by OEM drives and they come just wrapped in bubble wrap.

Well, I think any plastic box would do. Just add some padding around. But why not just buy External drive casing ? I would do a search on ebay, I have seen some very cheap deal, comes with casing, firewire or usb2 circuit adapters. By cheap I mean about 12 bucks)

Depends on how much money you are willing to spend of course, and how many drives you have. Other than than you might also be better off buying one on those multidrive towers, slip them in and connect them all together just like array system. All of that just seems easier than having to swap drives for easy access.

    Cheers,

We backup all our projects to bare IDE drives using this adapter:
    https://wiebetech.com/products/ComboDock.php

We then put them in the static bag that they come in and put them in 30 min Betacam tape cases. They almost fit 😉
Then you can put an elastic around the case to keep it shut and store it somewhere that is electro static free and cool.

Haa, I like that… The idea sound great !

But I would still be worried about having to handle bare drives everytime I need to access a project 😉

For archiving, this is a winner.

The static electricity from your body is the killer of bare drives. Just make sure you have grounded yourself to drain the static before you handle the drives. Most static charges will not harm the drive. It’s just the big ones.
Only handle the drive by the sides and don’t touch the circuit board on the bottom.
I have 20 or so 250gb drives on the shelf.
I usually charge the client for the drives and mark them up 15%

HAHA…right after posting this question I was eyeing a beta tape case thinking “that looks like just about the right size….”
