Thanks for looking into that Tim,
So all you listed, out of After Effect 720×480 – 29.97.
Put a piece of footage in AE, end with a card dance transition (Mine’ s pretty customized but it shouldn’t matter)
Put that over another track in Premiere and use the end of the card Dance transition to reveal the footage below.
My export out of AE was RGB+Alpha, million + colors – Straight
Again I really appreciate you taking the time to look into this.
BTW, the shift is much more evident out of firewire through a Canopus Box, but it appears on the Premiere scope as well.

No luck on the hold on out point. The last frame is basically an alpha channel by itself. Happens no matter how I trim the clip, always past the last frame. This clip is actually reducing my color saturation, so unless there is a bad bug in Premiere I don’t see how that could be happening even when the opacity is set to 0.

Thanks, I’m not sure understood your process. (I won’t ask how you came up with that 😉
I sliced the last frame, deleted it. Put a hold on the in point of the remaining clip, (can only set the speed at a minimum of 0.10). This basically keeps the clip at the same length holding on to the first frame. So I must be missing something.

480i DV Project, basically the PP2 default. Lower first on both clips, but again what strikes me is that it happens even when that clip has a 0 opacity all the way. I exported several times, straight or premultiplied, still the same issue. Not happening with any other clips. Again to confirm, that shift happens as the CTI leaves that clip, no matter what I trim it to. Does anybody know if opacity settings in Premiere ignores alpha channels ?

I would download a freeware called Gspot. Once you drag the file in the program, it will give you specific info about its format, the codec used, that would help figuring out whether that codec is supported by Premiere or not.
It could also have been corrupted during transfer (most likely).
Lastly, it could be an issue with Premiere itself. I would try importing a different file to see if the same issues happens.
Otherwise I would ask for a new AVI copy.

Ok, this is turning into a flame thread, so I’ll keep it short.
I worked as a system admin for several years, which you would think would make me somewhat of a computer savvy.
You have been basically flaming Alienware without making A SINGLE SUGGESTION OF YOUR OWN !
The poster was looking for a recommendation, which I have given. I have paid $1700.00 for a complete machine than I find does a fine job for me whether I work in 1080p through AJA or 480i.

I have to disagree. And there are plenty of benchmark reviews outthere to prove it.
I have built custom PC’s, I have also bought cheap PC’s (Some by Dell, which incidentally now owns Alienware)
These are very well built machines, and you get your money’s worth of performance as well.
If you are making money based on the time you spend working, and not the time you spend troubleshooting, then you’ ll go for proven reliability.
BTW, I am not saying that Alienware is consistently better than so and so, but you get what you pay for, we’re not dealing wine here…

Well, you can’t export 720i/p directly to DVD; it would have to be 480i/p by DVD standard. The only other way would be to put it on a “data DVD”, not playable on a set top player.
But if your settings in the DVD export are 720×480, then you should be fine, as Premiere will do that downscaling for you.
Can you post a screen cap of your settings on the DVD export menu ?
