Umm… Yeah…. Not a great idea. I have been editing some HD 720p multi-cam for PBS, but I have run into bottle neck and processor issues after about 5 minutes with just two clips. I just created offline versions of my 4 camera shoot and edited in offlineRT then reconnected without a problem. See multi-cam must run each shot at speed and at 110 MB/s for 720P you can’t get away with it. 1080i is even more data, and if your using DVCPROHD you’ll have decompression overheads.
Offline it and you’ll be much happier.

Some people have had luck using the Vo tool, by disabling the video side of the io, and then selecting it for Vo, but I have not. Your best bet is to buy a cheap audio interface. Most have gain and 48v for your mics, if your not using an external preamp.

June 30, 2005 at 7:00 am in reply to: Can the IO now be uswd as a stand-alone audio interface?Yes and no. If you need to move audio from say SDI to four analogue tracks, the the io will do it with only an only firewire mac, say a DV imac, and the control panel software. But, if your trying to capture audio through anything but FCP, or the new QT 7 player, look somewhere else. M-audio, an M-box, or another USB or FW audio interface will also be better suited for audio work. With mic amps, audio units drivers, pads, and editing software standard, you can’t go wrong in the sub $500 category. But, for my taste, MOTU makes the best hardware for the money.

Yes, its called an enhanced cd. The best way to do this is to burn the audio to session one on the disc, and the compressed movie file to session two. When the disc is put in a cd player only session one is read. When it is put in a computer both sessions load on the desktop or D: and E: drives. Usualy the data side has artwork text video and weblinks all in HTML or a stand alown Fash or Java player, but I have seen E-CDs with just a video file (QT) and a web link.

FCP5 and motion 2 are VERY integrated now. Literally your one click from moving media into or from either program, and it is all very seamless. I would NOT recommend running motion on 10.3.9. Half of the new code requires 10.4, and you will not be very impressed, with out 10.4. Now, that being said, if you have a G4 you have just about reached the software end of the line with 10.3.9 and FCP 4.5 Motion 1. If you have a G5, you’ll see around 20-30% performance gains in 10.4.1 with FCP 5, and Motion 2. At $800 for the upgrade from FCP you’ll be mostly left in a quandary over to move or not. For me on a Dual 2.7 G5 with 8GB ram and Xraid 5.6TB there is no question, upgrade. My 2.5G5 vs the 2.7G5 are over 30% apart mostly due to the os difference and refinements to FCP5 Mo2.

APC’s software works well, Belkin’s dose not. It’s that simple. Oh, and download the software off the website, don’t use the CD.

Editcam was originally designed for AVR avid files, but with the introduction of new software, and editcam II, they added DV25 support. These DV files are not normal quicktime files, but you can configure FCP to use them. Be advised however, if you do not transcode them into QT DV, you will not have RTextream support. The HD version of the editcam is AVRHD only. DVCPROHD is a much cheaper option that uses much less compression than the AVR editcam files, and is compatible with DV25 DV50 DVCHD and FCP over firewire. Also the new P2 hadcam is a dream, if your looking for a FCP HD hard Drive solution.
