The Majority of our suites are set up with a combination of Apple Monitors and one suite is set up with a Dell UltraSharp 20 & 24 combo. I personally own a Dell UltraSharp combination as well and like working with them all.

We are on XD Cam Transfer 2.7.1. As long as the disc is not write protected we can change the name of the disc in the desktop and when we click on to the Transfer window it asks if we want to save the information. This works even while the proxies are being created, but will not change the name of the folder in your capture scratch if clips have already been imported.

New Ram as mentioned and a new drive can help. I added a new drive to my old G4 1.25 and noticed a nice difference before giving it away to a struggling up and coming editor who runs it every week. Many of the old G4s are still solid even after years of work. My 2 year old Mac Pro is blazingly ahead of that G4. As Steve mentions todays Macs are a rocket compared to the G4s.

I love the Shuffle Edit feature. You just mark an in and an out in your sequence and Final Cut randomly re-arranges the clips over and over till you are satisfied with the results. Much less thinking that way.

What FCP version are you using?
What is FCP on (Laptop Desktop)
How are you bringing in your animations into FCP.

I normally use the Backspace Key to delete clips and close the space left by deleting the clip. If you have 2 clips on V1 and hit backspace on the first clip you should see the second one move to cover its place. Backspace works like a delete and cover. You might be deleting a transition and the media it connects to somewhere in your sequence without realizing it. This might explain the shorter sequence. I would select transitions and hit the delete key instead of the Backspace key. This way if you are deleting the media joining a transition you will notice a hole where the clip should be. Make sure you have a copy of your sequence prior to doing this so you can easily replace any media that might have gotten deleted.

If everything was well with your sequence before, you might have changed the playback frame rate to half or quarter. To check this:
click on the Sequence RT settings tab (top left corner on your open sequence)
go down to playback frame rate and set that to Full.Depending on your preference set the sequence setting to Safe or Unlimited. To get your audio scrubbing back its Shift S.
