No problem. I don’t keep things up long. I think I’m almost there. I have a few people checking out the newest version. If you see this today or tomorrow it should still be up.

Just so you know, the acting is EXCELLENT. I worked in theater for a decade, I can direct actors. Those these two were naturals.

That probably is the problem. Because they’re no longer the same clips. That does in a way come down to the name, which is where are they? On your computer, they’re on your HD with your folder and your names. While the names of the files are the same, the location of the folders are different (different computers).

    It’s all a learning curve.

I am only guessing. I’m fairly new to DaVinci. But, if it works in one direction and not the other, something is happening to the clips on the other computer. Somehow the names might be getting changed. You need to really look into how it’s built on the timeline.

I’m just going by an example I came across on my short. I synced video and sound automatically. By doing that, the sound names were erased from the timeline, and they were named after the video clip. For a scene I only used sound from an unused video clip. When I finished the edit, and cleaned up my timeline, and computer files, the sound was missing. Even though the sound file was still in my project and in the computer file, since it was nolonger named after the sound file, davinci didn’t recognize it. Something like that is probably what’s happening.

DaVinci is great. But, it’s not user friendly.

April 19, 2025 at 1:37 am in reply to: Export Time?

The computer I bought was a Dell about 2 years ago to record music with. In order to get Da Vinci to work on this computer I had to buy a new graphics card. I bought a Zotac GeForce GT 1030 because it was the only one that would work and fit in my Dell.

There’s two things, I’m using the free version of DaVinci, so it won’t work the same as the paid version. But, it should hold the render, and it doesn’t. With Final Cut, once I rendered a timeline it stayed rendered till I made a change to a clip. Then that clip would need to be re-rendered. With Da Vinci right now I can export a clip and the red line never goes away.

The second thing is, my computer has no problem working the editing phase or the color correcting. It possibly might not be strong enough to render such large files. I have to look into that.

I have been able to color correct and watch with ease as long as the playback is at 1/2, 1/4 or on proxy. I think I might be done color correcting. But, I’m not positive.

    THANK YOU again.

The BRAW footage is on an external HD. So, that’s not a problem. The problem is my computer.

I bought a Dell to record music on a few years ago. I swear it’s been sitting in the box for over 2 years. It’s perfect for the Reaper application. It wasn’t bought to edit movies on.

The computer has 1 TB of memory, and I had to upgrade the videocard just to get Da Vinci to work in it. It’s been excellent with the proxy footage. I edited the entire piece with the proxies. When it’s in BRAW mode viewing is impossible.

The math is simple, even though I’m only using 171 gigs of footage, there’s 717 gigs in the edit. The computer knows that. 171 still seems steep. I think editing with 100% raw footage is wasteful. There is a compression that can be used to shrink the gigs without losing quality. I just can’t seem to find out what it is.

When I used Final Cut, back in the days when minidv were the norm, the people on this site told me what to do to compress the footage for editing. Final Cut came with a compression software that did the job quickly.

The problem I’ve found with DaVinci, most people are using it to create their youtube videos. I’m using it for an actual movie.

Yesterday I copied the used portions. It’s down to 171 gigs on the computer. I’m opening it tonight and seeing if it’s viable.

    THANK YOU!

I have it all relinked, and I’m color grading. I’m not messing with the sound yet. I had it perfect, and now that it’s in the raw footage stage, some sound isn’t linking up properly. But, the video thankfully is intact in it’s cuts.

With me, it’s never easy. The strange part is, I can edit pretty well. I have a good eye for where to cut. Which is a talent. I watch some movies (even ones with good distribution) and some of the editing is pretty bad.

    Thanks again!

I copied my timeline into a new project, and uploaded from the external HD the BRAW files. So, I’m set.

Only the extensions have been changed. Some are still MP4, while others are now Proxy BRAW.

The original raw files are BRAW.

I edited this in January, and obviously have forgotten how to change the MP4 or Proxy Braw files to the real BRAW files.

Do I have to do this one clip at a time? I figured out how to do that already.

I thought there was a way to do it all at once. is there?

Stupid update: The problem came from me using proxy files not the raw files. I linked the two together, and it’s all A- OK.

I’m sorry, I’m not always clear. I see this problem in 720 footage.

The shot I put up is from a BMPCC6K FF. It’s not 720, it’s at least the normal 1080p. Which is why I find this distressing. I’ve never seen this in 1080p before.

I could be wrong, I’ll have to check again, the footage in RAW mode is all washed out. Even without the camera color grade added, I think I can faintly see these lines. If that’s the case, are they there to stay?

I’m new to Da Vinci, I can to an extent get around and change things. My timelines are in 1920 x 1080 HD, and that’s what I’m exporting in, in MP4. I already tried to export higher into UHD and received a message, my footage my downgrade because of upgrading the size. It exported and looked just as bad. Is there anything else I can try to get rid of these swirls? To me, it looks so unprofessional. The acting in this short deserves much better than what I have right now.

Thank you Mads, I’m so inept at cameras, I shouldn’t be allowed to hold one. The DP owned and operated the camera. However, the article made perfect sense to me. Everyone wants to keep up to date, they can’t see the flaws in owning more than you need.

Thank you Devrim, my footage is in 1080p, I will have to check the encoding rate & CBR options. When I looked at preferences and export preferences, they all seemed to be at the best quality for 1080.

I hope this movie doesn’t have to live with this.
