  • Resolution or ??????? in DaVinci Export

Posted by Van Lutz on January 24, 2025 at 6:04 am

I see this problem in some movies when the resolution is of lower quality. This is a CU of the problem from my exported movie –

I have DaVinci 19, the camera used was a BMpocket 4K, and the timelines are 1080p. Which is also what I exported.

When I see something in 1080p I never see this problem. I see it all the time in 720.

Is there a way for me to get rid of this? If so, how?

    Thank You!

    Hi,

It looks like a low-resolution encoding issue. When you select the 720 P, what encoding rate do you choose? Even with 720p, you shouldn’t go under 10Mbps, and the CBR option so encodes every frame constantly at 10Mbps.

    Hey Van,

Used to deal with this back in the early days of HD.
What you see is contouring happening as a result of your image being “down-graded” to 8-Bit or lower.

Not sure why you are going 720, unless it is equipment specific?

Maybe try a different codec (container) for export, like H264 (MP4).
Or check if you have imported your rushes in full resolution?

Last time I dealt with it was on a test production for an experimental digital camera, made by a major Film-Camera manufacturer. I had a real technical expert sitting in on the grade, and we adjusted the grade to make the contouring “dissappear”.

It may be that it is also present in your 1080 footage, but not easily to spot as a result of the bigger frame.

Have included article below on the subject.

    Hope that this helps.

I’m sorry, I’m not always clear. I see this problem in 720 footage.

The shot I put up is from a BMPCC6K FF. It’s not 720, it’s at least the normal 1080p. Which is why I find this distressing. I’ve never seen this in 1080p before.

I could be wrong, I’ll have to check again, the footage in RAW mode is all washed out. Even without the camera color grade added, I think I can faintly see these lines. If that’s the case, are they there to stay?

I’m new to Da Vinci, I can to an extent get around and change things. My timelines are in 1920 x 1080 HD, and that’s what I’m exporting in, in MP4. I already tried to export higher into UHD and received a message, my footage my downgrade because of upgrading the size. It exported and looked just as bad. Is there anything else I can try to get rid of these swirls? To me, it looks so unprofessional. The acting in this short deserves much better than what I have right now.

Thank you Mads, I’m so inept at cameras, I shouldn’t be allowed to hold one. The DP owned and operated the camera. However, the article made perfect sense to me. Everyone wants to keep up to date, they can’t see the flaws in owning more than you need.

Thank you Devrim, my footage is in 1080p, I will have to check the encoding rate & CBR options. When I looked at preferences and export preferences, they all seemed to be at the best quality for 1080.

I hope this movie doesn’t have to live with this.

Stupid update: The problem came from me using proxy files not the raw files. I linked the two together, and it’s all A- OK.
