I remembered with Final Cut I was able to create a new clip with handles at beginning and end. This would greatly reduce the size of the clip.

I’ve found the media management in davinci and it makes sense. I know what to click to copy or transcode.

    Here’s my problem –

I have 717 gigs of raw footage for a short film of 17 minutes. By copying only what’s being used, creating new clips with 24frame handles, it’s down to 177 gigs. That’s only what’s being used for this project. That seems outrageously large.

My footage is RAW and untouched, which means it’s uncompressed.

I don’t want to lose quality. But, when you transcode the footage, you have to give it all the parameters.

Could someone tell me parameters that are logical for this footage?

It was shot with a blackmagic (I think that’s it) cinema camera.

I believe it is possible to consolidate braw without transcoding. I haven’t tried it but I recall seeing it mentioned on a YouTube tutorial. Have a search for that or it might be in the enormous manual

And hard drives are so cheap that it’s a false economy in many ways

    THANK YOU again.

The BRAW footage is on an external HD. So, that’s not a problem. The problem is my computer.

I bought a Dell to record music on a few years ago. I swear it’s been sitting in the box for over 2 years. It’s perfect for the Reaper application. It wasn’t bought to edit movies on.

The computer has 1 TB of memory, and I had to upgrade the videocard just to get Da Vinci to work in it. It’s been excellent with the proxy footage. I edited the entire piece with the proxies. When it’s in BRAW mode viewing is impossible.

The math is simple, even though I’m only using 171 gigs of footage, there’s 717 gigs in the edit. The computer knows that. 171 still seems steep. I think editing with 100% raw footage is wasteful. There is a compression that can be used to shrink the gigs without losing quality. I just can’t seem to find out what it is.

When I used Final Cut, back in the days when minidv were the norm, the people on this site told me what to do to compress the footage for editing. Final Cut came with a compression software that did the job quickly.

The problem I’ve found with DaVinci, most people are using it to create their youtube videos. I’m using it for an actual movie.

Yesterday I copied the used portions. It’s down to 171 gigs on the computer. I’m opening it tonight and seeing if it’s viable.
