  • A DISASTER OF MY OWN MAKING: I’m a moron – HELP!

My External HD has MP4 footage of my film.

I created an edit and then I found out I need to color grade in the RAW footage.

MY FIRST ERROR was putting the raw footage on my computer. I then added it to my project, and somehow I was able to switch the MP4 footage to the Raw footage. Somehow that worked. – The problem was I used up all my computer’s memory. So, I switched to proxy mode, deleted all the raw footage from my computer, and the edit played fine in proxy. It was back to MP4 mode, or so I thought.

PROBLEM TWO: When I had the raw footage on my computer and switched back to proxy mode, it changed the MP4 on some files to (proxy) BRAW.

END RESULT: I have an edit that plays fine. But, the files are nolonger just MP4, many are proxy BRAW.

Tonight I imported the RAW files from my external HD and placed them in their proper scene folders.

I tried the way I originally did to switch from MP4 to RAW, and it didn’t work. I’m guessing (I don’t know a damn thing about this program) it’s because the file names are nolonger MP4.

Is there a way to get the MP4 and (proxy) BRAW files to switch over to the real RAW files?

This is so frustrating. I’ve been trying for hours.

    THANK YOU!

Yes a complete mess, but firstly what are you camera original files? I’m assuming BRAW as you said you reloaded them and they replaced the mp4 versions. So my next guess is that you started editing with mp4 proxies. Did they have the same name as the BRAW originals?

If you let Resolve create the proxy files from BRAW then you should have no issue relinking them to the BRAW camera originals on an external drive. If you are, then there was a problem creating the proxies and file names may have been changed. You may have to manually relink the BRAW to the proxies. If the name has been changed, I certainly hope the timecode wasn’t otherwise you are going to have to manually re-edit. Whatever you do, create a duplicate of your edit timeline so you can work in a copy in case you mess things up

I copied my timeline into a new project, and uploaded from the external HD the BRAW files. So, I’m set.

Only the extensions have been changed. Some are still MP4, while others are now Proxy BRAW.

The original raw files are BRAW.

I edited this in January, and obviously have forgotten how to change the MP4 or Proxy Braw files to the real BRAW files.

Do I have to do this one clip at a time? I figured out how to do that already.

I thought there was a way to do it all at once. is there?

You don’t need to make a new project, just a duplicate timeline.

If you hadn’t mixed things up with two types of proxy, then it might work automagically. I suspect you will need to relink manually. Another option to try is to export an XML of the timeline, reimport that and tick the option to ignore file extension. Then point the relink to a folder with just the camera original BRAW files and it might reconnect as it imports

    THANK YOU!

I have it all relinked, and I’m color grading. I’m not messing with the sound yet. I had it perfect, and now that it’s in the raw footage stage, some sound isn’t linking up properly. But, the video thankfully is intact in it’s cuts.

With me, it’s never easy. The strange part is, I can edit pretty well. I have a good eye for where to cut. Which is a talent. I watch some movies (even ones with good distribution) and some of the editing is pretty bad.

    Thanks again!

Once you’ve done the grade, you could just put those pictures with the audio work you have already done in the other proxy timeline.

    I will absolutely do that.

Thanks again for your help, I greatly appreciate it.
