I mostly need color presets, I shoot with a pro camera, and yes, good use of light is the most important thing for me.

Btw I got FCP7 in 2011, right when it got discontinued? what a ripoff!!

Yes I often use Color Corrector 3-Way.

I’m just looking for someone who has made presets, and options to add vignette and such.

The reason is that I am a very technically minded person, I like to use standards and follow rules on proper and best cinematic looks, in other words, I don’t like to re-invent the wheel. I always look to those who have pioneered and already did the work so their efforts are not in vein. 🙂

A plugin that has presets for various film looks, I believe DxO Optics Pro had that built in. But it’s for images, not video. I was wondering if FCP7 has any plugin like that?

  • If you set the Capture Preset (in the Audio/Video Settings dialog) to HDV-Apple ProRes 422 and use Log & Capture then it will do just that.

There is a trick that I found if you want it as one long clip.

Change Capture Preset to just HDV (not HDV-Apple ProRes 422). Then COMMAND+8 to get the Log & Capture dialog, it should look different, with controls and everything.

Make sure you rewind the tape first, then on the dialog, set up the clip name in Log Clip button near the lower right.

Then press the Play button and then (quickly!) the Now button in the lower right corner in the Capture frame.

    Press ESCAPE when done.

Warning: This does not always work though, and sometimes causes FCP crash.

March 12, 2015 at 3:47 am in reply to: Capturing HDV Video from a Sony HDR-FX7

The SONY HDR-FX7 can record both DV and HDV 1080i (even in combination on the same tape), but the MiniDV tape you have must be a MiniDV HDV tape (make sure it says “HDV” on the tape’s label).

Also, make sure that your camera’s REC FORMAT is set to HDV1080I if you want to record in HDV (On your camera, press MENU->IN/OUT REC->REC FORMAT).

In FCP, your Audio/Video Settings should look like this for the SONY HDR-FX7:

Before you ingest, make sure you first rewind your tape on your camera in VCR mode, then connect using a firewire/ilink cable, connect from the computer first then to your camera (“or else static electricity can damage it” -manual).

Once connected, run FCP and go to Log & Capture (COMMAND + 8), it will ask you for a name to prepend to all the clips, enter a short name and click Ok.

If everything works correctly, a window will pop up showing the capture in real time. Press ESCAPE when you are done. Note that it will capture to separate files depending on record start/stop points.

The captured files (hopefully) will be in prores 442 format and 1920×1080 resolution in the Capture Scratch folder.

    Hope this helps.

  • I meant the ones I created, not the defaults.

    March 12, 2015 at 12:55 am in reply to: sequence preset, 1920 x 1080 OR 1440 x 1080 ??

I have a HDR-FX7, although FCP7 recognizes it flawlessly, when it comes to capturing HDV 1080i footage, it does capture it just fine but I find I have to set the sequence as follows:

To set the sequence preset, go to Final Cut Pro->Audio/Video settings and click on the Sequence Presets tab, you will see a list.

Select Apple ProRes 442 1920×1080 60i 48kHz and then click on Edit… (not Ok yet!), if it asks you to make a duplicate of that setting, say Yes. I name it “SONY HDR-FX7 HDV 1080i Prores Editing”, but however you name or do it, you need to set the Frame Size to 1920×1080 as shown above.

I didn’t down scale it to SD for DVD, so I’m not sure how that will work out. I needed full HD, but for that situation, I think from this point on you can follow steps to go from HD to SD.

The only two issues is that:

    1. Once you drag a captured clip into the sequence, you need to answer NO when it asks to set the sequence settings to match the clip.

    2. You may need to render clips (Command + R) when editing, a pain.

March 3, 2015 at 6:18 am in reply to: Recommended Macbook for FCP?

Those do cost quite a bit used, the cheapest I could find was $600 on ebay.

Is there a “lower” cost macbook that can run FCP? I just want to injest footage on site, but not edit so I don’t need the CPU speed.

The camera I have is a SONY HDR-FX7, it only has HDMI and USB, no Firewire/iLink.
