I’d also suggest you go with sped up video and original audio, but if you really want, you can probably fool FCP into using 24p in the timeline with an XML script like we did here in Germany for 25p and 50p in progressive DVCPro HD.
Have a look here (sorry, English translation not ready yet):

DVCPro HD will not carry an alpha channel. But what about rendering a separate alpha if needed?

Great! Thanks for the interesting news. Will the hack also get me higher rates than 50p on the European model?
After all, 60p -> 24p is a 2.5 slo-mo, while 50p -> 25p is only a factor of 2.

50p and 25p in FCP is possible with some clever workarounds. A collegue in Germany has posted how:

(Unfortunately in German)24p is only possible with an US model. I’d always use “conform” in Cinema Tools to get from 25p to 24p, since you may get dropped frames by other methods.

You’ll need to de-interlace, scale and then re-interlace for normal looking SD in NTSC. Programs like FCP do this automatically.
All artefacts from the source will be scaled down in the process, so you’ll get excellent quality, if you don’t use DV.

It depends on the ‘look’ you are aiming at. You’ll get a kind of ‘cinematic’ look this way, and pans over architecture for example need to be done very controlled, slow and smooth to avoid stuttering images.
60p or 1080i will preserve more temporal information and will have more of a ‘video’ look and less stuttering with fast motion.
Hope this helps,

It’s normal that you can’t use the pn modes with a firestore, it relies on a fixed data rate of 100 mbps, so you get frames padded at 24 fps to fill the rate up, and they need to be removed when with the FRC (frame rate converter) before editing.
Only the P2 cards allow to use all possible frame rates without dubbed frames, no need to use the FRC there.

Conforming doesn’t throw away frames, it changes speed like a projector running at different speed from a film camera. We do it all the time to get from 25p to 24 or vice versa. Looks much better than changing speed in FCP, but going from 30p to 24p will give you a mild slo-mo, of course.

Even if I’m working with FCP for editing, I’d consider a PC laptop in the field if it’s faster (none of the new MacTels has a PCMCIA slot). Shouldn’t be a problem in the future since the next MAC OS will probably support NTFS completely.

I’ve been successfull with 25pn and HD Log. The clips show up correctly in QT as 25p and I can use them in FCP. Unfortunately FCP wants to render even with the correct settings in the sequence, but I get orange (restricted RT) with the ‘unlimited’ setting. Apart from that, it works.

Uli
P.S. I really like that camcorder!
