Sorry if this is a stupid question… But if I shoot 720 24PN and create a 720 24PN sequence in Final Cut Pro. What will happen to footage that was shot in 30P and imported into the 24PN timeline. I understand that the imported footage will need to be rendered, but will one second of 30P footage still be exactly one second of footage after rendering in the 24PN timeline – or are there any timing issues I need to be aware of.

Thanks so much for any input.

You just drop it in and render. But it might look choppy. I dropped 60p footage into a 24p timeline and sometimes it worked, other times it was choppy.

Another option to try is Standards Converter from http://www.nattress.com. That clears footage up for me. But I am not in the boat you are. I don’t know what it will do to 30P footage.

30p in a 24p timeline will be 20% slow motion and you’ll also have audio sync issues. No way around that. Native 30p and 24p are not good friends.

Thanks for the information. It helps me make decisions about an upcoming workflow.

If you are editing with FCP you can use Cinema Tools to conform the 30p to 24p.

Michael- does that actually throw away frames?

Conforming doesn’t throw away frames, it changes speed like a projector running at different speed from a film camera. We do it all the time to get from 25p to 24 or vice versa. Looks much better than changing speed in FCP, but going from 30p to 24p will give you a mild slo-mo, of course.
