On the Mac I’d suggest Main Concept Coder, fast and good. But the best out there is Cinema Craft on the PC, even in it’s basic incarnation

We did another test today of only three 400 GB Samsung drives (they said it’s a newer, faster model) and we got a speed of over 220 MB/s for both read and write with an internal RAID 0

You’ll have to expect dropped frames, normally DV Rack will give a warning.
Our Acer has Intel CoreDuo at 1,66 and 1 GB RAM. The clock speed is still a bit low for what Serious Magic recommends, but seems to work fine so far. I think it’s just the drive in our case.

Could it be they used Seagates in that box? Have a look at the strange results they got with those over at barefeats…

No, you are not allowed to run them simultaneously!
But apart from that, it’s a great combination. Actually, the little non Pro MacBook performs very well with 2 GB RAM, it can handle HDV and even DVCProHD natively and it supports two screens – we are using a 24″ Dell on it. Even the graphics are not as weak as some think, Motion performs better than on the standard card in a Dual G5 not even two years old. And we’ve only tested the first model, the new ones should be even faster regarding CPU (not the graphics).
If you are not doing heavy effects, just straight editing most of the time, it’s a remarkable lttle machine!

Well, we’ve successfully handled uncompressed SD from Digi-Beta in the old days on a mirrored door G4 Mac with an internal RAID 0 of two drives and the system on an external FW drive. It worked without a hiccup until the RAID was about 90% full

I’ve tested DV Rack with an Acer Aspire and a MacBook (non Pro). Both were pretty close to the limit with their internal 5400 rpm drives and DV Rack gave us occasional dropped frame warnings when capturing DVCPro (no problems whatsoever with HDV). Serious Magic is recommending a 7200 rpm drive for this format, which should work fine internally.
If you need more space and want more speed to feel safer, a small RAID 0 can’t hurt. But how would you connect it? IMHO both FW 400 or USB 2 won’t cut it, so we’ll give the new Apple MacBook Pro a try with it’s FW 800 connection. But we have not yet tested how well the FW bus performs under Windows, our RAID has not yet arrived. Another option would be a SATA adapter in the card slot to connect the RAID, which in theory should work fine.Regards,

HDV is exactly the same data rate as DV (25 mbps), only JVC has less (19 mbps). The problem might not be the drives, but the G4. HDV needs an awful lot of processing power for smooth editing. What level of G4 do you have?

We’ve bought it for exactly the same reason after I tested it for a German video magazine and it works very well.
Yes, it’s the only way to get analog HD output from a MacBook or anything else without room for a video card (iMac or Mini). I think there are interfaces for DVI to SDI in the market, but nothing as versatile as the MXO and not for the same price. It does a pretty good downconvert to SD as well, can even give you S-Video or composite(yikes) if needed. It’ll convert your desktop to video for training projects and will embed all audio channels into your SDI signal, not only stereo.
For someone working with a ‘studio in a suitcase’ it’s a great product
