There is no setup in the digital domain. It’s added only when the output is converted into an analog signal.
If you add it in digital, you add it twice!

Yes, avoid working in HDV! I’s a remarkable aquisition format for the price, but it’s a ressource hog in post.
Walter’s workflow is a very good solution. You can do it in software, but it’s much easier for day to day work when done in realtime with a proper I/O card.

We don’t own AJA, but a few Sony FX-1 and Z-1s, and we finished a project for an important German government authority last week. It was shot by Christoph Janetzko, our lecturer in camerawork, a very experienced DOP with 15 years of work in 35mm film behind him (he even has works of his in the collection of the NY MOMA).
It was transferred to 35mm by one of the most well-respected facilities in Europe, located in Berlin, and the first screening to the client was in a cinema in Babelsberg normally used by major European film productions for client presentation. All those present said it looked like good Super 16 and were very surprised to find out that it was shot on HDV!
So, a good cameraperson who really knows how to handle the limitations of HDV can truly compete in this field with others who own equipment worth a hell of a lot more…

I didn’t feel insulted or anything like that, don’t worry. Your input was fully justified. What we are discussing here is a very limited, but low-cost solution for capturing uncompressed HD

Jaggies are not a typical by-product of long GOPs

November 10, 2006 at 8:36 am in reply to: Mac Pro with 4 SATA RAID 0 for capture uncompress HD.Hi David,
of course you are right that the numbers will drop when it’s getting filled. But I’m aware of that and tested this on a RAID about 40% full at the time. Plus I tested with Blackmagic’s speed test, which is abit more realistic for video than the average benchmark. And I’ll defintely do a recording test as well and post that soon.
I’m aware that this is NOT a professional solution: It’s neither safe (I mentioned that several times) and it’s not fast enough for more than one stream. We’ll be using it for recording uncompressed HD from a Canon H1 in the studio.
A serious RAID for regular editing of uncompressed HD would need 6-8 disks and a FibreChannel interface.

Are you talking about the Cinema Craft Encoder or Main Concept?
I mentioned that CCE is PC, but Main Concept has versions for both platforms.

We’ve compared it to both (and ProCoder too) and liked it best.
