FireWire has always been advertised as hot-pluggable. But I suppose it can be damaged by static electricity like all other electronics.
OTOH, it can always happen that electronics fail after a short time of functioning. Other than mechanics, electronic components have a so-called ‘bathtub’ curve in reliability. I. e. high probablity of failure in the beginning, then low, then higher again after years. That’s why the military is using ‘burnt-in’ components in critical places. So, there’s a good chance it’ll be under warranty.

Compressor isneeds much longer and the quality suffers. Conforming with CT is the way to go in this case.

And on the camera? If you can’t even get it to became a host and see disks, it might be fried.
Sorry if I’m right…

Let’s hope Apple integrates RAID 5 into the next OS.

First of all: Are you seeing the jaggies in HD or in SD? I might be on a false track not knowing this.
There are two de-interlacers in Compressor. One is adaptive and can be found under “Frame Controls”, and that’s a pretty good one, albeit slow. Don’t use the one under “Filters”. The one I’m recommending is FieldsKit from http://www.revisionfx.com. You can download a watermarked demo from there and try for yourself. But it’s just a tad faster and better than Compressor, not worlds apart.
I get perfect images with a very complex workflow:
I de-interlace (adaptive) to 50 fps (60 in the US) with FieldsKit in After Effects, scale to SD and re-interlace to ordinary video. This is very time-consuming, though.Give the freeware MPEG Streamclip a try, it’s doing very good scaling as well. And, after all, the scaling has been improved a lot in the current version of FCP. You can set it to “Best” under the sequence settings.
Definitely don’t go the AIC route, DVCProHD as recommended by Walter is better.
BTW, I hope you don’t use the frame mode in a Sony, right? That one will give you jaggies from the start!
Hope this helps,

Could this be a scaling problem?

Snapz Pro is first grabbing an uncompressed movie and then you can have it written into all the formats supported by QuickTime. I tend to use uncompressed 4:2:2 if I have the space and Photo-JPEG@75% if space is tight (but that’s never RT in FCP).
Which format did you use? We made quite a few tutorials over here with Snapz Pro and the quality was perfect.
You know that the Canvas might be set to display less than full quality, do you?

Careful with the host mode: it’ll want to format the drive you attached into a PC format first and later make partitions (up to sixteen) for each card to copy.
In device mode you should see it just like any harddisk on your Mac. Do you get a “connect” screen? Do you know you have to press the button on the back once to get from camera to VCR mode and then hold it a second time until it’s in PC mode ?
Hope this helps,

It’s not the clip itself that needs to be long enough
