New G-RAID’s slower than originals in our testing
Posted by Walter Biscardi on November 8, 2006 at 4:25 pmjust wanted to pass along that we recently installed a new G-RAID 1000 model in our shop and noticed an immediate problem with it. When running alone, Read / Write was about 55 / 75. As soon as another FW800 drive was daisy chained, Read / Write dropped to about 20 / 75.
I didn’t think this happened with our original G-RAID’s so I tested them again adn they run Read / Write fo abou 57 / 85 no matter when they run alone or I have three drives daisy chained.
G-Tech sent me a replacement unit today because they though the unit was faulty, but I got the identical results. In fact it was more surprising because my G-RAID 500 is about 75% full and the G-1000 is empty, but the 500 is still faster. Weird.
Anyone else out there running G-RAID 1000’s and have an older model G-RAID to test it against? Just curious if this is something to do with the unit on a Mac Pro (Intel) or if it’s just something that has popped up in the design of the new models.
G-Tech is generally a solid performer when it comes to media storage so it’s kind of a surprise on our end.

November 8, 2006 at 8:37 pmLet me ask you this, Walter.
Don’t take this wrong but I have to ask. Do you have any FW400 devices connected to your system also? Just as a reminder and I’m sure that you know this, but the Apple firewire 400 and 800 runs off the same buss and FW400 has priority, therefore, your FW800 devices will step down to FW400.
AND as another thought… Have you tried changing the order of the drives’ connections to the computer?
And one more thing… The speed of the drives depend on their physical sizes. A 250 gig drive will be slightly faster than a 500 gig hard drive. Maybe look into that.

Nope, no FW400 devices at the moment. Tested both sets of drives with the exact same setups and cables.

Very perplexing as their products are outstanding and we do run a G500 and G800 unit here. Put all the connections the same and only the G1000 slows down.

Well… That’s odd.
I’m sorry if it seemed like I was asking basic questions but sometimes even the best of us miss the obvious.
Maybe your option would be to return it for another G800 unit. Sad that the G1000 is having problems. Would be nice to have that extra space.

I always say the dumbest question is the one that’s not asked. I usually find that after I’ve done the most complex research into an issue, it’s usually the very basic thing like a menu setting or a switch in the wrong place. Those were good questions, but unfortunately no solution from them.

As long as it runs by itself, it’s fine. What we’ve done is just shut down anything other FW 800 devices while it’s one. It’s just a stopgap measure at the moment as we’re going to be purchasing a new Fibre array in the next week or so.

November 8, 2006 at 11:16 pmI guess you guys know this but I will offer it anyway.
Check the temperature around the drive, as the temperature gets closer to absolute zero physical things tend to slow down.
THIS IS A KNOWN FACT!

November 9, 2006 at 1:23 amAre you running it into the FW800 port on the front? Back? Or a Card?
Not really up to speed on the new MacPro’s as I am waiting for the 8 Cores :-). Anyway, if you are running it through a FW card, could it be a similiar problem to setting up the proper “lane speeds”? Just throwing something else out there as I could be totally off track as that only affects your PCI-E Kona or Fiber cards.
Quoting the GTech webpage:
“The configuration utilty currently is not compatible with Intel-based Macs and OSX Server. However, the G-RAID Pro will operate normally on these systems.” Hmmm….that made me wonder if there are other issues with MacIntel systems that they have not flushed out with their drivers……but wait, FW does not need drivers.Oh well Walter, hope you find a solution. I’m going back to edit on my Dual 2 PPC version…

Running it through the FW800 port on the back. Same exact setup also used for the G-RAID 500/800 daisy chain setup.
It’s interesting that when the G-500 is daisy chained through the 1000, the 500 retains its speed, but the 1000 drops off. When the 500 and 800 are daisy chained, they hold their speeds. It’s only when the 1000 has something daisy chained on it.
Obviously the G-RAID2 has something changed in the internal configuration that is causing it to behave differently than it’s early cousins.
As I noted, we’re just turning off all other FW devices when it’s running. It won’t be a primary drive in our shop. It’ll be more of a backup and SD/DV type of unit. I just wanted to pass along to folks that this issue seems to exist since it was repeatable on the 2nd unit that arrived today.

Yeah, I wish somebody else out there had one too. Would love to know if this transfers to other systems.
