The deck won’t let me down convert with center crop out of the SDI or HDSDI plugs at 23.98. SDI downconversion only supports 29.97 for some reason. And, it seems that the Kona LHe doesn’t support real-time downconversion. I could be wrong about that, but I don’t see the setting in the control panel. I only see downconversion to an SDI stream.

Here’s what I ended up doing:

HDSDI 1080Psf 23.98 into FCP at DVCPRO HD.

I then created a preset in Compressor that gave me 720×486, 23.98fps, Photo JPEG with a 4×3 Center crop.

All the timecode remains and it plays back identical to the higher res version. Whew!

That only took 6 hours to figure out.

    Thanks for your help.

I understand that. But the image itself is interlaced in quicktime or FCP. It has nothing to do with output.

Ya, I know. Tell me about it.

This is just what he’s used to working with though. He takes all the shots, edits them in After Effects and does all his FX work at the same time. Usually online in Smoke.

Still having a hell of a time with this. Do you know if it’s possible for Kona LHe to do realtime down convert to SD via HDSDI?

It’s not DV. It’s HDCAM shot at 23.98. I have the deck set to Down Convert to SD, sending 23.98 with pulldown to the Kona card. It’s just a standared 3:2 I believe. It’s not Advanced.

Actually, I have to reneg what I just wrote. Even after the Cinema Tools reverse telecine, I’m still getting interlaced frames. It only seems to work with DV unless I can somehow figure a way to get the deck to spit 23.98 out of the SDI.

Here’s what I ended up doing:

I set the HDCAM deck to down convert (23.98 w/ PD). Center crop.

    SDI into the Kona.

I created a custom capture setting in FCP that digitizes 525i 29.97 with Photo – JPEG codec at 720×486 frame size and Pixel Aspect Ratio.

After digitizing, I highlighted all the clips and used Cinema Tools Reverse Telecine, bringing the footage back to it’s original 23.98 frame rate.

    Works great!

I’m digitizing footage from HDCAM, center crop, 23.98 DV, but since this is a spot for broadcast, it’s being requested at 720×486. This is especially important for the editor because he also does his own greenscreen FX work in After Effects, so he needs it at the output resolution.

How would you suggest I digitize the footage then? DV then use compressor to change the frame size afterwards?

In addition to editing, I do a lot of motion graphics. Apple’s Motion and After Effects have pressure sensitivity and other features built in specifically for the tablet.

I’m wondering if the tablet will give me the control over objects in my canvas that I need. For instance a trackball mouse is the worst for that kind of thing. Ideally, I would use ONLY the tablet for everything. I’ve seen people do this, but I’m sure it takes a while to get used to.

I am researching this switch for physical reasons. My hand and forearm are in pain, and I’m hoping that changing things up will aleviate it.

    Thanks for your advice.

I shot only this one tape, so it’s the only tape I know of.

Thankfully I have my Kona card and capturing into that worked fine. However, I lose my timecode. VERY frustrating.

This is why I hate HDV.
