Yes, that makes sense. Thank you very much for the clarification.

What confuses me is that when I digitize through the Kona card, the clips show up with a TC Rate of 30. When I digitize the same footage through firewire, the TC Rate shows up as 60.

Any ideas on how to change that?

I”m working on a project right now digitizing tapes shot on Varicam, and my Kona LHe is removing the frames, but it’s showing up in FCP with a TC Rate of 30.

Footage was shot 720p24. Digitizing using the Varicam 23.98 Easy Setup.

    Any ideas?

I’m sorry if I’m being unclear here. When this footage was originally digitized, the TC Rate was 60. By that I mean that when you looked at a clip in the viewer, the timecode went between 0 and 59 and hit various numbers depending which frames were flagged. It gave me 24 frames in between because the VIDEO FRAME RATE is 23.98.

Now when I digitize, I get a TC Rate of 30 and i see all 30 frames of video in between 0 and 30 in the viewer even though Final Cut is telling me the VIDEO FRAME RATE is different.

The timecode reading off the deck is 30fps, so it makes sense to me that that is why it would show up in Final Cut that way. However, why do I get different (and seemingly correct) results when I digitize through firewire with at 720p24 DVCPRO HD setting?

For whatever reason, the Kona card isn’t seeing the flagged frames and grabbing the right timecode the same way the firewire connection is.

Why not use the DVCPRO HD 720p60 23.98 Varicam setting that I was using? No need for 8bit. I’ve only been using presets all along.

Something new: I noticed that the TC readout on the deck is 30fps. It still doesn’t explain why in the other project the TC rate is 60 and the frame rate is 23.98.

[Shane Ross] “If you use a Kona card to capture (or Decklink…any capture card) you can have it capture and IGNORE the flags set by the camera.”

Do you know where this setting is on the AJA Control Panel? I don’t see it.

Could this have anything to do with the System Frequency setting on the deck? It was set to 59.94. Should I set it to 23.98?

    Shane,

I know that. So why isn’t the footage that I’m capturing right now come in at 60? Why is FCP interpreting it as 30? I’m looking at the exact same footage on another drive and it’s at 60!

Could it be a deck setting? Kona card setting? FCP Capture setting? Everything seems to be set up right?

    What am I missing?

[Shane Ross] “I seriously don’t get what you DON’T understand about this TC rate business. “

I understand how timecode works. What is confusing me is that this same footage was digitized into another project where the TC Rate said 60. So I feel like I might be doing something wrong!

[Shane Ross] “The footage is 30”

I don’t think it is. Like I said above, the footage was originally uprezzed and the settings are as follows: 720p60 23.98, TC RATE of 60.

Other than the way the timecode is displayed, there doesn’t seem to be a difference between a TC Rate of 30 and a TC Rate of 60. However with this footage, which was shot 720p60, the proper rate is 60.

What’s strange is, even when I change the TC Rate in the Browser before digitizing the clip, it changes back to 30 when I capture it.

Does anyone understand this TC Rate business?

Thank you. This is very helpful.

I am bringing the footage in at 23.98 through a Kona Card. So it seems the flagged frames are all that’s being digitized.

On an unrelated note, how do you do the Quoting of the previous person’s post in your own post the way you just did?

The footage was shot DVCPRO HD Varicam 720p60 23.98fps.

The frame rate isn’t changing, but the way the timecode is displayed IS changing. So, in the viewer, when I match frame a clip, with the TC Rate set to 30, it displays 30fps timecode, skipping frames so that there are 24 in 1 second. The same happens for when the TC Rate is set to 60.

I don’t really know what the point of the TC Rate is. I imagine it’s so that you get frame accurate digitizing, but thus far, it hasn’t been a problem with the TC Rate of all the clips set to 30.

It IS possible for me to change the TC Rate in the Browser back to 60. It doesn’t affect the media in the timeline. It only changes the way the timecode is displayed in the viewer when I look at it.

Do you have an understanding of what all this means and what I should do?
