There is a lot of marketing with words. If I’m recording, I like Sony MDR 7506 or Audio Technica ATH-M50.

I don’t mix on headphones, but do use them to check effects levels and for detailed listening.

Hello Andrew and welcome to the Cow Audio Forum.

You are presuming that the audio input to the GoPro Hero is mono. From their web site, it appears that the input of the GoPro Hero 2 is stereo. (see below).

Unless you can determine otherwise, your problem is solved. Just get the correct y-cable and use two wireless mics, one into each side of the Y.

if you have trouble finding a y-cable, Eric Toline can make you one. He’s quite good at that and has made many for me.

Please be advised, the new GoPro Hero 3 has MUCH better audio than the earlier models. I wouldn’t try to “get by” with the audio if you have a Hero 2.

I don’t know any audio monitors in the $500/pair range that I’d want to sit in front of and make mixing decisions. Mackie 824 are about as low as I want to go.

They’re not “just speakers.” You’ll be sitting in front of them a long time making critical decisions.

The zoom doesn’t have enough clean gain, and even if it did, you ‘d be better with a good mixer between the mic and recorder that has good quiet gain and a limiter. Tickle the limiter with your signal and you can get a good 3-5 dB safely onto the recorder. Get a Sound Devices 302 mixer. Be happy. Sound better.

Right. I figured the DP was overcranking for an effect, but you never know. No, you can’t really expect to use the sync audio from the camera when you slow it down to 24, 25 or 29.97 fps. YOuhave to do that with ADR.
