Can you be more specific- there are a few effects in this clip.
Some are practical effects with projections of the image of the singer on the set. Others are just layered shots with transparency and color correction. There are a few that can be done using Posterize Time and Bad TV preset like it was suggested.

  • I do not think that you’ll be able to mix the two techniques (if I understand correctly what you’re trying to do). You either do a camera projection and give dimension in 3d space to your image by building a projection structure that is 3d, or you cut up your image and create the illusion of a 3d scene by arranging parts of the image in 3d (mainly on the z axis). Mixing the two will give you overlapping edges like in your image.

There are several ways to approach a project like this. I currently work on a film with a friend in the US and I just finish all fx, render them and then use Dropbox to transfer them. E-mail and Skype are essential in communication. In your situation I would mirror all material and update the edit as many times as it is adjusted by the editor. This way you are up to date and can use Dynamic link to work on the fx. Depending on what you use for color grade, this may be the best way also for grading.

  • I can’t see from the images you posted how you build the image. For something like that you would need quite a few layers, with a lot of painting behind the shapes you cut, and even then it would be difficult to get the right effect because of the perspective. Can you post a few stills showing all the layers (cut outs) involved in building your scene?

You got some great advice and your project may be done, but here’s my 2 cents:
Once you animate your mushroom layer, pre-comp leaving all attributes.
Duplicate precomp layer in Timeline as many times as you need to match the number of PSD layers.
Replace precomp on duplicated layers with the imported PSD layers of the colored mushroom by selecting and Alt drag over.
Offset the keyframes in each of the layers in the Timeline by a few frames from the one below and animate transparency if need be and you get a trail with the exact colors in your PSD file.

There are several ways of achieving this.
Quick way- use a preset from Toonit (Red giant) and masking
A bit more elaborate- Use Find Edges, masking, compositing (transfer) modes and a few other AE native plugins to make the lines wiggle.
Long way but one that will give you the “drawing on film” look for sure is to actually paint the shapes frame by frame like they did in the film days.

  • I think that precomposing the stem with the flower should do it then.

  • Even if I do not exactly understand how you animate the stem, can’t you duplicate the stem layer, precomp leaving all attributes and inside the precomp position your flower comp at the top of the stem and turn the stem layer off?

  • Can you elaborate on how you’re animating the stem? Not sure I follow.
