Making Rainbow Trails off of a PNG
Posted by Matthew Chapman on January 4, 2013 at 1:18 amHi all-
Trying to make rainbow trails off of a simple PNG, in a 5 second comp.I tried following these instructions from David Rickles and get nothing. no change to my comp whatsoever. I bought trapcode particular just for this.
https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/50/856087
What I have is a PNG of a mushroom

And what I want is the trails (done in photoshop)

I have tried both trapcode Particular and echo, and no real luck.
I would like to keep the color scheme of the trails too (more earthy tones than neon)
Any suggestions?
Thanks all!

January 4, 2013 at 2:02 amI guess it would be more like the color of the first, but the detail of the second.
The mushroom also needs to spin as it goes. So for instance I set the PNG to 0 rotation, then moved the cursor to the end and set it to -1. Then I pre-composed the layer, but still didn’t see any trails when using particular, and selecting the layer as the particle.
Thanks Tom!

January 4, 2013 at 4:45 amAlternatively, you can achieve some rainbow trail effects using:
Echo + Coloroma
or
CC Time Blend FX + Hue/Saturation
These methods both have what might be significant downsides* but they may also be exactly what you’re looking for 🙂 So here’s my contribution in project file form for your perusal:
I used solid colors in the Time Blend FX example but you could also tritone the image instead of using fill and then rotate the hue in the same fashion.
*The blending when using Echo isn’t ideal. Time Blend FX uses previously cached frames and so sometimes misbehaves. It also is not compatible with render multiple frames simultaneously.

January 4, 2013 at 5:37 amI really like the echo + colorama Darby, it’s perfect.
Now I have done many things in AE, and maybe I am just not getting a basic concept, but How did you get the FX to apply to the layer without being a part of the comp itself.
Admittedly, AE is a hobby for me, not a full time job, but like I said I have made some pretty advanced comps in my time. Maybe I am missing something pretty basic?!

January 4, 2013 at 5:41 amMaybe I should be in beginner guys, BUT i tried applying echo to a pre-comped spinning Mushroom, and no luck. What the devil am I doing wrong?!
File here:
I did watch the tutorial including nesting and precomposing. I did pre-compose the layer but the echo still shows no effect.

You need to apply your transformation keyframes inside the pre-comp.
