Making Rainbow Trails off of a PNG

You got some great advice and your project may be done, but here’s my 2 cents:
Once you animate your mushroom layer, pre-comp leaving all attributes.
Duplicate precomp layer in Timeline as many times as you need to match the number of PSD layers.
Replace precomp on duplicated layers with the imported PSD layers of the colored mushroom by selecting and Alt drag over.
Offset the keyframes in each of the layers in the Timeline by a few frames from the one below and animate transparency if need be and you get a trail with the exact colors in your PSD file.
