  • Lossless will be hard to play realtime on most machines. This is used for a archival or intermediate (post production work) level. For delivery you can use H264- just do not use AE to render that. It is best to render a final master with a lossless codec and then use AME (Encoder) to compress. For YouTube you can use one of the presets or (better in my opinion)render a CBR 5mbs H264 in a QT (mp4) container that will be later re-converted by YouTube to a 6mbs.

  • If you have a precomp that holds the image layer inside the duplicated precomp, then you have to duplicate that as well in the Project window and replace it in the duplicated and replaced initial precomp. Sometimes depending on how the templates are build you have several precomps within precomps. You need to duplicate and replace all precomped elements in order for you to have a separate comp that can have all the base elements (images and video) replaced.

you can draw a shape in Illustrator and use the gradient mesh to adjust the color inside- import in AE and reveal with mask.

  • You are duplicating the precomp in your main comp Timeline creating a second instance of the same precomp. To be able to use the same settings/animation but with a different image in the precomp, duplicate the same precomp in the Project window, rename it, select it and select the duplicated precomp layer in the Timeline, Alt click on the renamed precomp and drag and drop over the layer. This will replace the instance with the new (renamed) precomp. Now you can open it and change the image inside.

  • Animation or PNG, QuickTime – good options for a Master.
However, for delivery/playback formats you need to figure out what format is best.
In my workflow we use 50 mbs mpeg2. But that is now in a broadcast environment, 18 years ago I used to render Targa or TIFF sequences.
H264 comes in many flavors. A QT container (mp4) is the best in my opinion. It will then come down to bitrate, frame rate and frame size. For delivery on YouTube for example use CBR (constant bit rate) at 50 mps – once you upload it will get re-converted to a 6mps version any way. Vimeo (paid version) enables higher bitrates. There’s no one universal solution- you will have to customize for each situation.

For questions like yours it is necessary to add the following info:
    OS
    Version of AE
Where you using any other apps on the machine while AE was open?

We may be able to better assist with the info above.

FreeForm will not only help you roll the layer in 3d space but you can also displace the surface using a displacement map that will help create the crumpled paper look.

That is true, however not knowing what is used to spin the object I would use a higher frame rate – it will make the spin smoother.

re-shoot at a higher frame rate – that’s the only thing that will work as it should. You could try Twixtor, Time Remap, or any other similar plugin to create in-between frames but it won’t be the same.
