  • The clouds/smoke can be a stock clip or a particle system (Particular for example).
The glass letters can be 2d or 3d. For the 2d version you can use Bevel Edges and Generate/CC Light Sweep and then play with compositing options (Overlay, Multiply…) using several instances of the same layer to get the glassy look.
For the 3d version there are several options: Zaxwerks Pro Animator, Element 3D, ShapeShifter AE or C4D.

  • A 2d animation could be done using shape layers, Mesh Distortion and Find Edges.

In the tutorial for FreeForm Pro you get a pretty good description on how to create a 3d shape of a skull moving- that can be applied to create the face, hands, sword. The rest would be combining the particles as a texture with the displacement. This should provide you with all you need for the task you want to accomplish. Next step would be to pay someone to make it for you…

  • Ted would do just fine- only my grammar school teacher called me by my last name.
Working in 1280×720 will allow you to get a good quality final product. The trick is to figure out the final format of the frame- 4:3 or 16:9 so that you can arrange your graphic elements. You can always be safe and work with 4:3 in mind.
For output presets from AE you can check out the Adobe help.

A combination of 3d displacement and particles will do the job just fine.
For particles I recommend Trapcode Form or Particular from Red Giant. There’s quite a few tutorials that provide techniques to create the smoke or fire:

The 3d face and sword shape can be created using Mellte’s FreeForm Pro. This tutorial can provide a great start:

  • The PAL format has the following format sizes when you use square pixel:
    4:3 = 768×576
    16:9 = 1024×576 ( Adobe has decided 1050×576 is the “true” size )

The question to ask is how will this be seen by most viewers – in a 4:3 frame (older tv sets), a stretched 4:3 to a 16:9 (new 16:9 tv sets). Depending on that you can use the 4:3 or 16:9 square pixel format to create your animation. The final result will be squeezed in a 720×576 frame anyway it seems from the station’s specs. So ask them if they recommend the 4:3 or widescreen based on their research.

What I recommend is to use a 1280×720 square pixel (16:9) frame to create you animation. Once you have a final render, create a PAL SD comp, drag your finished render in it and resize to fit the Height of the frame. Then, based on the final decision – 4:3 or 16:9 – leave the frame cropped for 4:3 or squeeze (resize) the width to fit the 720.

  • Use the masks or split the path in two at the point you need the animation to start, have two paths and animate them individually giving thus the impression that the animation starts from the middle towards both ends.

The easiest way would be to create a true 3d distortion – if you have a newer AE version and a decent graphics card you can use the native 3d layer distortions from AE. If not Free Form or FreeForm Pro should provide you with the right tools.
