You may be watching your preview window at half/third or even quarter resolution. Make sure in the Composition settings that the setting is full resolution.

So you have 2 3d layers (solids) you want to move in 3d space. Since it looks like they are generated in AE directly (you said they where solids) it can’t be a Layer Styles problem ( like if you imported them from PSD with layer styles which mess up AE when it comes to 3d). So my next guess is that you may have 2d layers in between them and AE does not like that. Post a screen cap of your layers so we can see your set-up if the above does not help.

Select Multiprocessing, allocate at least 2GB RAM per processing core.
If you leave 2GB RAM for other programs, then this allows for 14GB for AE. You should then use 7 processing cores for render in AE and leave the rest for other applications.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

Particular 2 could be, but also probably some particle systems in a 3d soft like Maya or Max.

July 29, 2010 at 7:48 pm in reply to: After Effects keeps crashing on the same frame. At times I’ve had this happen to me for no apparent reason- AE just did not like something on one frame. The workaround was to render frames (tga or tiff) and when it crashed to skip that particular frame and render the rest starting from the next frame. Then I would try to turn off filters and play with the settings as Dave said, by having Caps Lock on so that AE won’t refresh. Once I turned off a filter I would turn off Caps Lock and see if it crashed again. Most times with particles it was the motion blur- once turned off it worked. So I would render out that frame with no motion blur and then “fake” the motion blur, then insert the frame in the sequence.

July 29, 2010 at 10:55 am in reply to: need advice – AE keeps crashing – audio previewAE is not really meant for audio editing/mixing. It is best to use Premiere/FCP or other editing software to mix audio to a final track and then import that in AE. Another reason for crashes would be if you use mp3 instead of wave or aiff- but still, with a lot of tracks you may still experience crashes.

I have used a combination of scale and mesh distort to get that effect. Basically you set the mesh on the end frame undistorted, keyframe, then distort backwards, animating the scale as well to zero.
I bet you can use puppet tool to achieve a similar result as well.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

It looks like your footage was interlaced to begin with and you reversed the field dominance in the interpretation of your footage- so whenever you have fast movement in the frame you notice the jitter. Check and see if that’s the issue.

If your source is uncompressed and you keep rendering all effects and grading to uncompressed formats, then you should be fine. The visible loss in quality comes in when you work with compressed footage and then render out compressing again. So if you have a compressed source that you need to work on, convert that to an uncompressed format, apply effects and grading, render out to uncompressed and then use a compression software (like Adobe Media Converter) to compress to a delivery format.

Yeah, I know, if I had my choice I would not use that either, but the place where we’re shooting has only these two cameras that fit the budget so I have to choose one of the two- my initial thought was AVCHD, so I guess that’s what I’ll be using.
