Pretty much all you need is a bunch of paint strokes created in Illustrator (for example) that are revealed by animated masks. Make a black & white render of the animated strokes and then use that as a matted for the footage layer. Of course the animation needs to follow the brush as it moves- also you will position the strokes created in Illustrator to follow the brush movement ( you can also distort them with the mesh warp).

Thanks Dave! That’s really funny! I just think your idea was great, now that I had to post this about 5 times.

Oh, one more thing- before doing that, consider re-shooting with a fire in front of the actors…

Problem with fire- making it believable- it’s in the shadows. You can’t get the real thing in post. What you can try to do is to play with shadows on the cave walls, on their faces and on the ground. All the shadows pf course need to move according to the way the fire moves.
Lightwrap the fire when you comp that in. A bit of glow may help.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

Maybe I should have a stock answer like Dave has- it seems that this is one topic that a lot of people are asking about. Here it is:L
Card Dance is the plugin you’re after.
This tutorial can help:

It used to be on this website
https://maxafter1.blogspot.com/2008/12/card-dance-tutorial-coming-soon.html#...
but it seems that is not working right now- luckily I found the above link.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

Also, if you have Mocha you may try to track the wall behind with that.
But what Simon suggested my work- try adjusting by hand the track you have, it does not look that far away.Tudor “Ted” Jelescu

August 12, 2010 at 4:51 pm in reply to: [AE CS4-CS5] How to make 2d photo animation (3D photo effect)The first well-known use of this technique was in a movie called, “The Kid Stays In The Picture”. If you google it, a couple of tutorials should show up.
Basically, it requires slicing a photo into several planes. In the example of that train, it would be like this:
• deep background (sky)
• background (horizon)
• middle distance (closer hills)
• subject (train)
• foreground (tree in front of train)You do a lot of masking and image repairing in Photoshop before you do anything in AE.

August 10, 2010 at 8:11 pm in reply to: Trim out shortcut leaves a frame at the end. Why?In AE, the cursor on the timeline is at the beginning of a frame and not at the end. So whenever you are trimming you have to cosider the last frame, that frame which is after the cursor- that should be easy enough since that is the frame you see in the viewer anyway.
