You’re going to get the bumps unless you have a very smooth road or you drive on a track. Those bumps are going to translate to the camera unless you have someone where a steadicam rig and they are moving with the bumps. My advice is to put the camera on a bean bag or bunch of towels. Make sure it’s stable enough so it won’t bounce around. Point and drive. if it’s too bumpy, you can smooth it out in FCP’s smoothcam.

Bottom line is there is usually a reason why really expensive equipment is really expensive. And there’s a reason why low budget productions look low budget. You have to face the facts.

I was on a shoot today that got canceled because they didn’t want to pay for the proper equipment. After 45 minutes of messing around, they realized that they weren’t going to get what they wanted. Reschedule for tomorrow at 9am with the right gear. Time wasted. Schedules re-arranged. Money still spent.

I never got the footage recovered. Transcend claimed they looked at it and then they sent me a new card. I had a couple of more cards go down. I’ve sent them to Panasonic and they are sending them to Japan. They’ve determined that I had a bad camera – something was wrong with the board. So I’m getting a brand new camera, not just a repair. At least that gives me a little more confidence now. But it’s been a hassle and I’ve lost footage and money as a result of cards going down.

September 13, 2009 at 5:40 pm in reply to: backup to LTO in the field?

Never used LTO. But I just got back from India. I bought the CalDigit Mini. It’s 1 TB but I put it in RAID 1 mode so it ended up being 500G. They are so small and they are bus powered so no extra cables.

I’d almost suggest buying 4 of them, set up as RAID0. Making 2 duplicates. As soon as the first 2 fill up, ship one back home and keep one with you. That way if you get robbed or shipwrecked, you’ll have one safely in the hands of DHL or safely in the hands of Tom Hanks on a deserted island.

No. Panasonic USA looked at it and wanted to send it to japan. Then I talked to transcend and they said they’d look at it and try to recover the data. Since it’s their card, I sent it to transcend.

This program isn’t working because the card isn’t even being recognized by the computer. I tried to download their DrDD software and that doesn’t recognize it either. I think I’ll try a friend’s PC to see if a PC can at least see the card.

Have you ever experienced this? I’m nervous that the first time I use the camera for a paid project and it lets me down. Tape has been good to me. Even my limited P2 has been good.

Well, to be fair, how many “on-camera lighting” setups don’t give you the spotlight effect to some degree. That’s the nature of a small light, in front of your subject. If you can put the light on a stand, off center, then it’s better. Or perhaps give it to your PA/grip to hold. Small budgets means you make sacrifices.

I’ve also used the small Frezzi. They have proprietary batteries and charges. Or at least they are not standard AA types nor are they regular prosumer camera battery friendly. They have a big longer throw than the lite panel. they get hotter too. Or, you could get the lite panel Mini which is bigger and gives way more light, at around $450. Still runs on AA’s.

Lite Panels Micro. about $250. Great as long as your less than 10 feet from your subject. Runs off 4 double A batteries.

July 23, 2009 at 10:09 pm in reply to: FCS3: The REAL Game Changer is….

I’m using the new AVCHD format. Currently, in FCP6, my only choice is to Log and Transfer into AIC or ProRes. That means there is no Offline option. That is, unless I have something like the MXO2 or an AJA that will transcode for me. But that means more equipment.

Is P2 the same? Is there only one or two options for Log and Transfer?

So for me, having an Offline solution is a huge benefit. Very likely will upgrade at $300.

Let’s say I’m in India in 2 weeks. I’m traveling with my camera and some equipment. I also have my MBP. I also have a new CalDigit mini raid which is bus powered. I can not only copy the files to the hard drive, but I can transfer them to ProRes Proxy files and work with all the footage in the airport.

Ummm, not to be picky, but it’s not just a proxy if it’s a screen shot of FCP. That’s the file the way it is from the capture scratch. So assuming the video has been captured at full resolution, then the image in FCP is a full resolution image. Otherwise, what would be the point of editing in FCP if it wasn’t WYSIWYG? It’s not like he’s editing with Proxy files from P2 cards or SXS cards or RED files.
