on camera lighting
Posted by Matt Campbell on July 27, 2009 at 8:30 pmI’ve searched the forums for on-camera lighting for the HVX 200 and am not having much luck. Can anyone recommend a good on-camera lighting kit for this camera? We are in need of a camera light for some night-time man on the street style interviews. Nothing fancy or expensive. Just something good that will get the subject lit. Similar to what on the scene news reporters would use.
What do I need to consider as far as powering the lights?
Any suggestions? Thx

July 27, 2009 at 10:26 pmI don’t believe you did not find anything. This question has been asked many many times.
Here are a couple lights to get you started.

July 27, 2009 at 11:43 pmLite Panels Micro. about $250. Great as long as your less than 10 feet from your subject. Runs off 4 double A batteries.

July 28, 2009 at 12:13 amI’ve used the Lite Panels Micro several times and it’s better than nothing… but not by much. Low output, (with a spotlight effect) which dims significantly over the hour that your battery will last. You could try this: https://www.flolight.com/catalog/product/view/id/53/s/miclight/
It’s probably just as bad -for only $150!Jason Jenkins

July 28, 2009 at 12:28 amWell, to be fair, how many “on-camera lighting” setups don’t give you the spotlight effect to some degree. That’s the nature of a small light, in front of your subject. If you can put the light on a stand, off center, then it’s better. Or perhaps give it to your PA/grip to hold. Small budgets means you make sacrifices.
I’ve also used the small Frezzi. They have proprietary batteries and charges. Or at least they are not standard AA types nor are they regular prosumer camera battery friendly. They have a big longer throw than the lite panel. they get hotter too. Or, you could get the lite panel Mini which is bigger and gives way more light, at around $450. Still runs on AA’s.

July 28, 2009 at 8:05 pmSorry about that. Maybe I was in the wrong forums cause all i was finding was about lighting kits vs. actual on-camera lighting. Thanks for your response. The lite panel one seems to be pretty popular. Appreciate the help.

July 28, 2009 at 8:07 pmThanks all for your help. I’m leaning towards lite panel. Unless by the graces from above we get more money for better lights. appreciate it.
