[Steven Love] “but with all the enhancements to fcp 7 and X using proxy files I thought was the way to go on a MBP…which was why proxy compression was added right?”

Humm. Can you say that again. I don’t quite understand what you were trying to say.

Are you talking about Magic Bullet Mojo or Looks?

Mojo has been shipping for some time. At last report Looks was working in FCP X, but there is a bug with previews that make it not ready for release until Apple changes some things. See here:

I have had some audio sync problems with 1080p h264 footage during playback, but they are only during playback. On export they are fine.

Try making proxies or optimized versions of your media (File > Transcode) and see if that helps. Also try exporting your timeline and see if the problem persists.

First check if you might actually have both channels in the inspector. See here:

FCP X is very much a “organize after the ingest”, ie. marking favorite ranges, naming, etc. and unfortunately doesn’t (yet) support writing back metadata (i.e. filenames) to the actual files. While this is quite good for my workflow, I can completely see the shortcomings that it brings to yours.

You might want to take a look at CatDV and see if it would be useful to you:

I would make sure you send feedback to Apple regarding this, and let the know specifically why you need the feature. I have seen a number of other folks put this high on their request list, so the more requests Apple sees the better.

Unfortunately you can’t move your post. Just repost, is perfectly fine.

However in answer to your question what you want is some kind of motion tracking. After Effects and Motion have point trackers built in. Mocha is perhaps the best tool for this but might be bit pricy.

If you don’t have either one, Motion 5 is your cheapest option. $50 at the Mac App Store.

Alternatively you could keyframe and try motion tracking by hand. Not terribly difficult, but it’s results sometimes look not so good depending on the footage.

January 24, 2012 at 4:48 pm in reply to: Muting FCPX whilst it captures?

I’m not at my office right now, but I have done many hours of ingesting from HDV and MiniDV while I am working in other Apps and I’m 95% sure the audio doesn’t play back the SOT while capturing. However, I create camera archives first which I have found to be the preferred workflow. I would try that and see if that works out for you.

    Matthew –

This sure sounds like some kind of disk problem, whether it be a permissions setting or kind of disk error. I have not yet seen this and I have moved projects around on many multiple machines without issues. However, I routinely run fsck and also DiskWarrior on my drives. I would give Apple a call about this, follow the prompts or ask for Final Cut Pro support. I’ll bet they have some record of it, if not they can probably walk you through some troubleshooting.

Can you try to upload the screen shot again. Make sure the preview looks good before you post.

January 20, 2012 at 12:33 am in reply to: Just wondering

I’m actually running FCP X on an few unsupported graphics cards.

First is a MacBook Pro 3,1 (2007) NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT. It is open CL, just not enough vram. FCP X runs just dandy if I am dealing with SD, or Proxy for HD projects.

Second is a MacPro 2006 1,1 with a NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT. This one I get a warning that the graphics card is unsupported. It barely works. Very sluggish. Much slower than the lower clock speed MacBook Pro. However, I have a Radeon 5770 in the exact same MacPro in another office and it works like very well with FCP X. Handles 1080p, 2K and even 4K just fine.

I would go ahead and try the trial of FCP X on your box, but in reality you need more Ram and I would get a new video card too. The 5770 should work for you. I would buy as much ram as you can afford. 12GB being the minimum I would use.
